    Shakey Empty Shakey

Post by cheespiece Thu 25 Oct 2012, 4:23 pm

Hi, need a diagnosis from somebody with more experience.

Lift both hands from the handlebars (not like throwing them in the air or anything, merely releasing your grip from the bars) on my CB500 while in motion, any speed really, and the front end will shake like nothing else, only a little at first, then more of a wobble before going absolutely wild, at that point I daren't let it carry on and so I control it and ride on. It's sort of like, when you see the high-sides in racing, where the rider tries to hold on but the front end shaking side to side is too violent, but obviously less violent as I know it's coming.
Any idea what's wrong? what needs fixing / replaced?

Tyre pressures good, givi box on or off this happens, stock handle bar end weights both fitted. Steering head bearing problem?

Could be steering head bearing problems, but it could also be:

Wheel out of balance (doesn't take much, believe me).

Problem with the wheel bearings on their way out.

Back wheel out of alignment (it should be more easy to lean a bike into either a left or right hand turn if this is the case).

Tyre not sitting evenly on the bead, probably on the front wheel.

Used to get this on a CB250RSA, and it was down to rear tyre wear. Nothing illegal mind you, but it just reached a point where this started to happen.

    And again, tyre pressures.

PS: On another forum I go to, man with an RF900 had similar, and he swears it was the speedo drive. It went away when he replaced the speedo cable apparently, but I can't see this, nor have I heard of this before. Shocked

not much to add to that ,just total agreement about the wheel balance.if the balance has been out for a long time the tyre may be showing signs of uneven wear too

Sorry to be such a misery guts, but just thought of a possible other cause. *D'oh* :

Brake disc at front warped and binding intermittently as the wheel rotates. You'd feel a pulsing effect if this was the case though.

Hope it turns out to be something simple to detect, easy and cheap to fix.

Mine does this when the pressures are low - it reminds me to check 'em!

    Hi,

yep, tyre wear and pressures are the first things to check. After that, notchy steering head bearings then rear suspension height - as you take hands off bars bike decelerates so more load on front.
After that, check bike is straight (forks, wheels in line etc as said)

Ladies and gents, after trying everything to solve the above problem I have finally solved the shaking. Rear suspension was frigged. Fitted new hagon system and we're straight as a die, with or without hands!

Glad to know you fixed it.

With hindsight it makes sense: when your suspension 'dies' it looses damping, which means that the bike is more likely to bounce around and resonate, hence fitting your hagons (with their working damping) fixed the problem.

Just shows how these things are all interconnected...

My '99 CB500S does this too. I just noticed it today on the way out to 'Ards this morning. Hope it's just tyre pressures this time and not replacement Hagons required. Treads look fine and everything looks straight enough.

study the shimming concept and all its causes and transfer it to a detailed study in your CB

In practical terms, what are you suggesting I do?

I did read a long time ag that problems at the front usually start at the back! If your rear units were not working in unison, i.e. one damping and the other not so much it may have shown up play in the wheel bearings or swinging arm so although you don't feel the shakes now maybe you should double check all the "things that hold the wheels together"?
Just a thought for your peace of mind further on.
    Have fun, stay safe. Dave.
