Carb balance problem
A question for the technically minded. Trying to balance carbs using Carbtune vacuum thingy. Using the balance screw between carbs i get a good balance at tickover but when i give some revs right side flies up and left side doesn't do very much. Am i looking at a blocked main jet? Is it cos idle jets are clear but one main jet is blocked. Have i got to take the bloody carbs off again. What other possibilities are there? As no fuel is flowing without the vacuum pipe attached is one side running out of fuel before the other? Grateful for any thoughts.

Re: Carb balance problem
It could be worth checking the diaphragms to make sure that one isn't leaking or torn. Probably the right side. It could be that debris from the secondary filter (they fall apart and end up in the vacuum chamber ) is preventing the slide from opening properly.
If you're getting a good tickover then as the idle jets are much smaller than the mains I doubt that it would be blocked.
Also check for air leaks around the inlet and airbox rubbers.

Re: Carb balance problem
Non of that necessary Andy, I thought before getting too involved I should check that we (my mate whos carbtune it is and I) were doing everything correctly. Quick read of instructions and it seems the 2 vacuum hoses have a restrictor at one end an this should be towards the engine in both (BOTH) cases. Lo an behold with that sorted good readings all round. This final running with blue coolant has at least shown me where the one small leak is, so that is next job. Yes indeed. Its a male thing isnt it. Just do it an when it goes wrong, as you say, RTFM! Its my friends carbtune and i assumed he knew what was what. He's ex RAF, I should have known! The good thing is engine running and sounding good. Will fix this small coolant leak from the coolant inlet manifold on front of block tomorrow and start thinking about front end mods.

Soldiers go into battle and leave the officers behind, sailors go into battle with the officers whilst airmen stay behind and send the officers into battle.
