    Tyres ! Empty Tyres !

    Post by muttley1 Wed 11 Jul 2012, 10:45 pm

    Hi,

    its that time again, my 090's are worn out so shiny new rubber is needed.

    I've a set of race scrub 003's but these might not be the best in the wet (090's cope though) so I'm loathe to fit them and wait for summer.

    Anyone tried Avon Roadriders? These seem to be a newer BT45 competitor and get good reviews and have a steep profile from the pics I've seen online.
    Btw roads I ride are b and c class mainly, bendy, varied surfaces, all year round.

    cheers

    I have use Roadriders now for over 10,000 miles not had any problems with them at all, but I do run 33psi front & 40psi rear Very Happy
    tyre pressures seem to be that way even with BT45.
    bike is used all year round not had any problems in wet.
    good on motorway or twisties.

    regards.

    Roadriders ordered from FWR, £155 on nextday delivery and local workshop will fit for £15/wheel.

    Ta for the advice on pressures, its always a lottery to get right.

    Out of interest, did you have to shop around for that price or are they about the same everywhere?

    Hope you can review the new tyres as I need some in the next month or two. Was going to go for BT45s.

    I had a set of bt45's fitted a few weeks ago for £190.
    And that was a ride in, ride out service and took an hour, which I thought was a reasonable price.

    The only gripe I have about these tyres, is how the front has had a stone and a piece of glass embedded in it after just 300 miles.
    But a bit of vulcanizing glue sorted that out.

    Although I think I will get some roadriders once the bt45's have worn out.

    Hi,

    looking good so far, next day delivery with citylink, tyres fitted and balanced, look to have a nice semi-steep profile..will put them on tomorrow and off we go, gentle scrub in ride, not time for the jack up plates just yet then...

    Will do a review when they are settled in.

    Btw, did a bit of a shop around, could have got them cheaper from Busters and perhaps ebay but FWR were pretty well priced and did the cheap delivery. I've used them before with no probs.
    I did call Frettons over at Leamington, they fitted the 090's at £10/wheel last year, now wanted £25/wheel (!). Went for Cherwell M/cs in Banbury who did the job, they are a new and seemed sound guys.

    I had this happen on the front tyre with Pirelli sport demons, glad I spotted it before it completely delaminated!

    Thats a 50 mile scrubbing in ride done then.
    Tyres came inflated to 32fr and 32r so this'll be the standard settings. I set the pressures at 32 front 40 rear (having run the 090's at this). Roads were bumpy uneven country lanes. Here's an initial review...

    bike tracks well, keeps its line and is stable despite overbanding and broken surfaces. Good ride quality at 50-70.
    Changes direction well on sweeping bends and responds best on slower bends to driving harder through than with the 090's, otherwise it seems to drop a little - might well be due to the pressures or that the Roadriders are "taller" than the 090's. Late direction changes are no problem.

    Will see how they go but initial impressions are pretty good, might play with the pressures.

    I have Avon Road-riders - I use them at 29F and 36R (the upper end of the reccomended range) without a problem.

    I tried slightly higher pressures (like the ones you were using) but found this made them 'skip' a little more than I would like, so reverted to standard.

    Hi,
    changed pressures to 29/36 and ride is indeed improved. They came inflated at 32/32 so this might not have been far off the recommended pressures?

    Roadriders still getting the thumbs up.

    When I looked into it, Avon recommend the 'standard' CB500 pressures...

    The 'higher' pressures used with BT45s (I suspect) is to do with the differences in their construction vs. other tyres.

    I had no idea about the increased pressures on the bridgestones until I read it here, it does make a hell of a difference in the twisties!

    Post by alexibrow Mon 23 Jul 2012, 9:11 pm

    I had AM26 Roadriders on my old CB400 and my Bandit 600, to be honest I didn't like them. Had a couple of nasty slides at very low speed in the wet (could have been diesel), and I had the rear spin up at about 60mph in the pouring rain (mind you it was quite squared off).

    So today, I spent bit of time shopping around for some sticky rubber that would outlast the BT45s that were fitted when I bought the CB500 back in May. The rear is almost wor out already, and the front is showing signs of uneven wear and some cracking as well.

    I looked at these tyres:

    * Bridgestone BT45;
    * Michelin Pilot Active;
    * Pirelli Diablo Rosso II.

    And I managed to score a pair of the dual-compound Pirellis at an utter bargain price!

    * Front tyre 110/70 17, from Moto-Tyres.co.uk: £54.30.
    * Rear tyre 140/70 17, from Tyretectrading.com: £76.50.

    Delivery included in the above price, making the pair come in at £130.80!

    I've not tried Pirellis, so I'll be interested to see how they measure up in terms of wet grip and longevity.

    Well, the Pirellis are simply horrible.

    At motorway speeds, a small push on one end of the handlebars results in an unnerving weave that I've never experienced before.

    I guess these tyres just don't suit my bike.

    I'm getting a pair of new BT45s fitted on Friday.

    It turns out the tyres aren't so bad with the top box (containing heavy laptop) removed.

    I'm still replacing them.

    Nope. Sold them on eBay, hopefully to someone who isn't going to put them on a CB500.

    I have Bridgestone BT45s again, much better! I tried running 29psi front and 33psi rear, but they're a bit too soft. 36 front and 40 rear is way too hard, and wears the tyres out too quickly. so I've gone for a compromise of 32 front 36 rear, which feels about right to me.
