soon to be CB500s
Hi all,
just wanted to introduce myself here - I'm Mike from Dublin, and hopefully will buy my first CB500s this Saturday - I'm pretty excited about it, as I'm coming up from a smaller Virago 250

Welcome Mike! I guarantee you'll have a big grin when you ride the CB5 home after being on a Virago 250!

Re: soon to be CB500s
so I got it last Saturday, '98 CB500s in black, came home sth like 300km on highway and everything was fine with the bike, not so much with my arse..
anyway, bike is better in the city than on highway - no wind protection..
apart from some surface rust, cannot spot much wrong with the bike now, but will do full inspection and service later as I'm busy with job at the moment
from your experience where are the points to pay close attention to?

Re: soon to be CB500s
Mostly the obvious things (as with any bike):
* Brakes - friction material depth on pads, thickness of discs and, if possible, remove (at least) front caliper to clean out accumulated crud.
* Tyres - tread depth/wear, corrrect inflation.
* Oil - level and, probably, a change w/ filter
* Chain - tension, lubrication and check for signs of wear
* Battery/Charging system - the rectifier regulator can 'go' on these bikes, so it's worth checking that you get approx 14V at 4-5000rpm across the battery terminals.
* Cam-chain tensioner - any rattling/clanking noises?
Anyway, that will keep you occupied :) Have you got a Haynes manual? There is a pdf one linked from the 'Workshop' section of this site...

Re: soon to be CB500s
got the manual, thx
no rattling noise that would remind of chain (if it sounds the same as chain in car)
one thing though, when on lower revs (higher gear) and opening throttle there is some jerking-forward-motion until revs hit sth like 3000-3500
say I was in fourth gear going 50km/h and accelerated it would feel as if sth rocked inside the engine - is it normal because revs are too low? didn't experience things like that on Virago V-engine

Re: soon to be CB500s
It's normally OK from about 2500rpm, so it shouldn't be too jerky.
Do you know if the bike has been off the road for a while? Sometimes the carbs can get clogged up with old/dried up fuel which can cause this sort of thing...
Have you checked the chain tension? If it slips it can have that kind of effect.
It is also worth checking the clutch cable adjuster to make sure there is sufficient slack - make sure the clutch is not slipping.

cb500
Hi Mike, sorry I didn't reply to you sooner,
I had it advertised on donedeal,sold it last night,got very close to my asking price,sorry to see it go really,but I have the Pan now and need the room in the garage apart from anything else.
How is your CB500 going for you,they'd be a brilliant bike in the city allright,wouldn't fancy filtering through Dublin on the Pan,but on the open road she's a fantastic bike
