Should I get a CB500?
Hello all. I haven't had a bike for years, and when I had one I was more of a hooligan than I am now.
My workplace is being moved in a few months to a place with no car-parking, but good bike parking.
So, I'm thinking if I buy a sensible bike, I can save a fortune on paid parking, and, you know, be a proper person again.
It's only 40 miles per day, with all the holiday I get probably less than 10,000 miles per year.
But I've been away from bikes for so long I don't know about the costs of servicing, tyres, and most importantly insurance.
I'm over 40, no points, max NCD on my car, but does that count for much since I don't have a garage?
I wonder if anyone my age who keeps a CB500 in the garden can tell me what they pay for their insurance.
I'm probably going to have saved up about £1500 for the bike by the time I need it, so that's going to be what the bike will be worth.
I was never interested in sensible bikes before, but even so; everybody knew the CB500's reputation for reliability and practicality. It even looks quite nice.
Apart from being too fat for my old trousers I have gear so that's no additional cost, it's just the insurance which might be a problem.
Does it sound like a sensible plan, and is the CB500 the right bike? I think I know what the answer to the last question will be...

of course a cb 500 is the right bike!! I'm wrong side of 50, got 2 years NCB, park in front of house with a ground anchor and heavy duty chain, and TPFT with Carol Nash is £150

Wow £150? My bike insurance was £700+ back when all my hair was on my head. OK the CB is officially my mid-life crisis bike of choice! Thanks stormy.

Get one, you won't regret it. I'm 42 with 1 years NCB and I just paid £66 TPFT. That is in a garage though.

Mid life crisis?? My kids said that to me and I said no, it's no crisis, I'm finally realising my ambitions, having devoted 20+ years to them! Hope you get a nice cb 500 and enjoy it as much as I am.

its a yes from me too. you wont beat a cb500 for getting back on the road, and if you wanna be a hooligan occasionally it will do that too cheap to run and insure, easy to fix and reliable. go on you wont regret it

Age 59, 3 years NCB, Clean licence, bikes garaged :
£205 fully comprehensive covering 3 bikes (including business use on all 3).
There are some bikes that that you fall in love with because they are just so good, and the CB ticks all the boxes for me.

For comparison, I'm 19, 2 years NCB, clean licence, bike parked on street outside and i pay £183 for TPFT. I dont think you should worry too much about insurance prices!
As for the bike it does everything i would want, while also being very cheap to run and fix in the unlikely chance that something goes wrong.

Re: Should I get a CB500?
My kids asked me if it was a mid-life crisis My age 43 years old I said no its a restart of my life after going on hold while having kids, I pay £235 per year for fully comp with breakdown & bike gear(helmet & clothing) , 2 years ncb, 6points bike parked on drive. with swinton (equity redstar) could of maybe got it cheaper if I had used a go compare, lol
oh yeah tpft would of been under £90 per year.
