Another new one, after advice
Hi all, just brought me a little cb500 x reg (94 i think)
Am after a wee bit off advice.
Im after a nice set of chain and sprockets, can anyone reccomend a
decent set, also am after fork seals as my left hand one leaks, theres
not pitting on the fork i think the seals just knackered, local
'mechanic' has said i will struggle to find a set,
Can anyone help ?
I live in Farnborough, Hampshire if it helps..
Cheers

Re: Another new one, after advice
mmmm..... sounds like the local mechanic is trying the old scare tactics to drum up some business there.
Short answer is that seals/parts for the CB500 are readily available.....
These from a one minute search on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB500-CB-500-93-99-FORK-SEAL-DUST-SEALS-Set-/270634209977?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3f030e52b9
and
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB500-CB-500-1993-1999-Fork-Seals-/290474661192?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item43a1a39548
But most of the time your local (good) motorcycle shops have them on the shelf.
Same with the chain/sprocket kits. Ebay has loads, but I'd recommend the DID O ring chain. May cost a bit more, but in terms of durability, I can't fault them.

I have to agree with the chrome fella, it is always worth spending a few more quid on a decent chain/sprocket set and DID are sure one of the best.buy cheap and the sprockets are kinda like cheese and wont last 5 minutes.
probably the same with the seals tbh,it aint a job you want to be doing every month, lol.
good luck

Definatly time for a new mechanic.
Honda still do replacement parts for the CB500/CBF500! Let alone probably hundreds of pattern parts people.
Have a look at:
http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_motorcycle_parts_block_selection_M30.php?mod_01=1542
or for pattern parts:
http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/honda/cb_500_r_t/93-96/
All of those parts are for your bike!
If you don't mind a bit of DIY it is possible to do both the chain and the fork seals yourself.... equally, these shouldn't things that any (competent) mechanic should be able to do.

Re: Another new one, after advice
cheers guys, ive done a bit of fiddling with bikes before so im competent enough on the chain n sprockets, was a little concerned as for doing fork seals myself however, having had a poke around on the internet this morning and reckon i'll give the seals ago aswell..
Was well aware of e-bay/wemoto etc, just thought i'd chuck it out on here to see if anyone had any other decent site's or helpfull knowledge..
Once again, thanks for the replys.

You shouldn't have too many problems doing the fork seals - I did and it hasn't gone horribly wrong yet!
It is also really, really worth changing the fork oil... a lot of people go for the heavier weight oil (15 or 20) rather than the standard wreight (10). My bike felt a lot better and I stuck with 10... the 'oil' I took out of the fork-legs was mainly gunk!
Have you thought of putting fork gaiters on? I did after I did my seals and haven't had a problem since.
Glad to hear you're up to speed on Wemoto etc

Welcome Paddy!
A daft question for you, is your CB an old X-reg ie 1981/82 or new X-reg 2000/01?
Reason being is the 70's CB500 twin is a totally different beast to the 90's one.
Your mechanic is a plonker by the way, you could try Gordon Farley in Ash or Portman Motorcycles in Guildford. Nice to see another local member, I'm in St Johns near Woking!
