Givi topbox rack wanted Empty Givi topbox rack wanted

Post by grumpy_gorilla Sun 15 Aug 2010, 9:04 am

I have a Givi Monolock flow 350 motorcycle storage, top box and require the rack to be able to fit this onto.
Not sure whether any other model rack will fit my 1998 500s.
Any advice welcome, thanks

I think with monolock your best bet is a universal mount attached to a rentec sports rack.

Thanks for that . I had a similar thought but when I saw a Renntec sports rack on ebay (item number 280436803509) it specifically states " These racks are not designed for top box fitment."

What I don't know is whether that means that the topbox won't fit directly onto that rack or that the universal plate that came with the topbox won't fit onto that rack .

Have you actually seen a universal plate fitted to a Renntec sports rack?

I belive that the givi universal plate fixes onto a rentec - one of my mates has exactly that configuration (adittedly on a different bike). I think the rentec racks are all pretty much the same size.

Rentec do advise against fitting a topbox to their rack; personally I belive this is rather over-cautious, especially if you aren't using the box for *really* heavy stuff and/or a pillion is hanging onto it (the rack, that is).

Rather hillariously Givi reccomend that you don't put more than a 5kg load in any of their top boxes..... I belive this is to cover their arses when you do something *really* stupid and it also means that they don't have to do any stability testing on all the bikes they sell racks for (which, as you can imagine, could be expensive).

I think that if you apply a modicum of common sense you shoudln't have a problem.

I've seen various rentec racks with universal topbox plates fitted on the bay.

The one that came with my bike had even had the grab rail removed to allow a more central fitting but sadly no box or plate.

Yes I know where you're coming from , Renntec won't even acknowledge that topboxes can be fitted to their racks but as I only want somewhere to put my helmet when I 'm stationary weight isn't an isssue.
Thanks for your comments

If you're only using it when stationary (or for, say, waterproofs, or something light) then I really don't think it matters.

On a slightly more cautionary note I have noticed the effect of my Givi E45 box when it is heavily loaded - the handeling of the bike is `different' but not 'dangerous'.

Guess what! Having decided to go the Renntec route I spoke to a supplier of racks who persuaded me that if the Renntec rack was only a single point fixing for my particular bike then it could give problems with tilting under weight. The Renntec was a single fixing so I decided to get the Givi "proper" rack for my CB500. Now I find that the "universal" plate that I have does not fit the Givi rack and I'm into having to purchase a "MM" plate to get it to fit. Oh joy!!!

Why didn't I listen to you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beware of the Renntec rack.

I had one with a box that held two helmets in it. Over time the welds began to fail due to the 'tiliting' effect the welds began to crack and eventually failed. And no I did't overload the box. As said previously I think the Renntec rack is fine for a single helmet capacity box.

So I then purchased a Givi rack second hand on Ebay and had no further problems.
