after market exhausts...fuel?

So decided to treat myself, and bike to a new end can and it seems like the general consensus on this forum is that 'fuel' cans are great.

So had a look and i almost bought the stainless round midi. as it seems like a good size neither too big/small for the size of bike and pretty well priced..

I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a sound difference through the range mini/midi/maxi range?

Its got to sound good - natural (not like a boyracer's Corsa with a huge exhaust) , make me a bit more noticeable to London pedestrians but not so much that it becomes tiring to hear on longer rides or required me to wear earplugs.

Also does anyone feel strongly about other brands that i should look into before i commit ??

Its also got to fit the standard steel downpipes as im not changing to stainless just yet.

Hey Geewhizz,

I know off people that have fitted Fuel,
most seem to like the midi as it has a nice note,
they all come with link pipes that fit okay to the steel headers fine, link pipes have the bracket (Centre stand stop) fitted to them.
Plus as members of cb500club we get 10% discount
midi & mini do look nice too.

I went with the Midi, can't say ive compared the different sizes though. I was thinking the same when i ordered, you think they would at least put a sentence in about it huh.


I went with midi because i felt that length suited the bike better, the maxi looks really long, and the mini is probably a bit loud and also looks like a stubby which doesn't really suit the CB's style imho.


They are great cans either way, you won't be disapointed

the mini looks good on the er5 here but my gut feeling is that that can will look a bit small on the cb5 for some reason. maybe because i dont really like small/stubbys either

anyway seems pretty great and i guess can expect similar for the cb midi...

Sounds good on the chap on the video`s ER5 ("even though it`s just an ER5")!!
I have a midi on my CB5 and am delighted with it. I fancy it improved the performance too. It`s certainly much lighter than the original.
BTW, rest assured, you don`t need to take a hacksaw to the CB!

For all the good reasons posted above, I too went for the midi. And I generally ride it without the baffle...

I think the sound is 'deeper' with the midi and longer silencer (like an organ pipe) which all seems easier on the ears than a higher pitched even louder note from a short can...

got one ordered went for SS midi round as planned.

did anyone need to rejet or remap after fitting the can? I know it says I shouldn't need to on the Fuel website ...

Nope. No rejetting needed. Engine runs smoothly...

If you are lucky they might throw in a free Kendal mint...

My Fuel exhaust is so much better than the rusted original! I've got the round midi as well. The only issue I had was had to get an extra bolt put through the mounting bracket as exhaust kept slipping round and clamp wasn't tight enough, but it's fine now and stayed put since that's been on, otherwise fit was no problem at all, and I got the 10% discount.

So.... my exhaust arrived all nice and shiny, it was easy enough to fit and it looks top. I had an interesting test drive with the baffle out, through the city.

Wow its properly loud and had the desired effect of increasing my presence on the road. Mission complete - almost.

I'm going to try it tomorrow with the baffle in, mainly because I expect my neighbors enthusiasm toward their 'shaking windows' will be short lived.

At times I felt it sounded a bit like an sv or ducati. which is nice. However when I come off the throttle the bike pops and growls a lot which was good fun too but I maybe wouldn't fancy hearing it on every ride. Has anyone else experience this? And will it decrease with the baffle in?

Another thing, the supplied hose clips have numbers stamped on them like 51-55 and 55-60. There is no reference to this on the fitting instructions but I was wondering if they related to suggested torque settings?

Anyway, all in all my initial feeling towards the exhaust are very good indeed.

Good job on the install. And glad you too are enjoying that new 'v-twin' sound - it really does give the bike more presence, as you say.

For what it's worth I also get a little of that snap, crackle, pop, from the silencer, but only when I change down (and the system is hot).

My old Enfield used to do that as well, so I'm used to it and quite like it. Being slightly unpredictable it gives the bike a more visceral, alive, quality...

I went with the baffle in today. I though it stopped the popping but once the engine got up to temperature it began again, but definitely within livable limits - and importantly it still sounds great.

Also took the opportunity to swap the plugs out for some iridiums, coolant change, castrol oil change, new oil filter and the sub air filter, was going to change the air filter but it still looks really clean. To top it off i went and got a new rear tire fitted as well.

I got the feeling that the bike has a little more pull around 6500rpm? Could be placebo effect of the new noisy exhaust. Either way I'm happy.

Also the peak of the vibrations used to be at 4000rpm and I used to try and avoid spending much time there - now its seems very smooth throughout the rev range.

Was wondering if it my imagination or could the bike become less snatchy when changing down since fitting exhaust?

Anyway, hopefully I can stop dicking about with my bike and get on with the rest of my life now.

The numbers on the clips refer to their size in mm.
