Which CB500? Empty Which CB500?

Post by franito Mon 16 Sep 2013, 7:31 pm

I'm interested in buying a new chain for my CB500 2002, but the web site (Wemot.com) lists two versions for my 2002 CB 500:

i) Honda CB500 SY/S2    00-02

ii) Honda CB 500 Y/2      00-02

I am none the wiser!

Can anyone advise me or direct me to a web site for Honda parts.

Thanks.

Before you do anything else; get hold of a Haynes manual.

Read up on the Final drive section to educate yourself on the what's, how's and when's.

Really.

It's much easier, because the manual has a complete instruction with nice photos, tables with torque settings, advice on tools needed and whatnot.

Second: Most likely, browsing the manual will inspire you to do other jobs on the bike yourself, as you learn there's little mystery to most things doable by DIY mechanics.

Third: Having read the manual you will be able to ask better questions, in turn getting better answers with less fuss and surprises. The percentage of 'nails you hit on the head' will increase, yielding more satisfaction doing it yourself - which then comes full circle when you do the next - harder - job with confidence.

The manual is the single best investment I've made with the CB.

Regarding your chain: Be aware that it's recommended to consider the final drive (chain + both sprockets) as one item, meaning you must exchange all three at the same time. The reason for this is that exchanging eg the chain only will cause the worn sprockets to ruin it very fast. In other words; exchanging a worn chain will be false economy.

Tried to purchase the manual from Amazon UK last night; only to be informed that it could not be sold to a resident of Gibraltar!

Will have to try buying direct from Haynes or from eBay.

Thanks 'Crotch Rocketurer' for the info.

It would appear that I have a CB500 Y/2.  :-)

Get the Honda Shop Manual instead of a Haynes; far better.

I have the Honda Shop Manual and supplements for later models. I also have the Honda parts book - I found them all on ebay, a dealer was offing them. They're invaluable. I've got the Honda manuals for my VFR too.

Have you got the part numbers for the books? I am going to tackle my valves shims and need all the help I can get! Thanks!

I did my shims on one of my previous CB500's and was surprised how small the range of new shims was! I ended up swapping some about, and was only worth buying a few as the sizes available were not much improvement.
