LED fork lights
I fitted these today, not to see with, but to be seen.
LED strips, with a self adhesive backing, wired into the dipped beam.
I always have my lights on, so they will be lit all the time I ride the bike, unless I'm on full beam, when they are not needed.
Crap phone camera photo.
People certainly seem to notice and they cost next to nothing, so I'm happy with the result.

Anything that helps you to be seen has to be a good thing.
Are there any 'rules' about extra lighting? Not that that would stop me!

Re: LED fork lights
I'm not sure there are any rules. Lots of cars have led lights on the front.
If the MOT man says no I'll wire a hidden switch in for MOT time.
If the plod tell me it is illegal then I will take them off, but until that happens I'll keep them on.

Re: LED fork lights
I've bought a 12v compressor for the tyres which works
perfectly on the car but not on the bike. I've connected
a fused cigarette lighter socket to the bike's battery and I
checked that I was getting 12v across the socket terminals,
yet the compressor is completely dead when I connect it
to the bike. Any idea what may be causing this? The only
reason I can see is that I might have reversed the polarity
of the socket but surely this makes no difference, as it
is DC, isn't it?

Re: LED fork lights
There are lots of rules. Not that I know of a specific rule that forbids your quite ingenious little arrangement, but all the cars you see having LED lights are most likely type approved with those.UKTyler wrote:I'm not sure there are any rules. Lots of cars have led lights on the front.

My guess is that the MOT man will disapprove of your idea.
Regarding the plod; Dunno about yours, but danish plods are a mixed thing. Some care greatly about the fine print, others will look at things from a more practical point of view and pretend to not see, if whatever you do makes sense. Rumour has it, they're actually human like you and me
Now you got me thinking 'Yellow side lights... Must be doable'.
Re: LED fork lights
These lights come in a range of colours and can be cut down to suit, so long as you cut three LED's off at a time.
The yellow ones are cheap at the minute:

I have seen a similar set up wired to the indicators and stuck on the side of the radiator.
I was thinking of getting a red set and putting them around the base plate of my top box plate and wiring them into the brake light. But then the bike will end up looking like a fairground ride
In total these lights cost me about £2 wired in (but they have gone up a bit since I got mine), so for that money you can't go wrong. If they do need to be taken off then it is no big loss.
I'm out and about this week, if I get a chance I'll see the MOT man to see what he says.
The only policeman I have spoken to in years was outside mt flat, looking at my bike. When I went to see why he it turned out he used to own one and we chatted CB's for 10 minutes. Most police are fine, I followed a police car last night with these on and he didn't seem bothered. A truly anal traffic cop just out of training might have something to say about it, but I'll worry about that if it ever happens.

Re: LED fork lights
So, then. Now I've ordered the bits for a fairground ride. Both yellow and red strips.UKTyler wrote:I have seen a similar set up wired to the indicators and stuck on the side of the radiator.

At daytime the strips will only be seen when needed, and at nighttime - well, I don't really care as long as the cars notice me. Rotating beacons, fog horns, just bring it on!
Re: LED fork lights
Even if they are on in the day they are barely noticeable.stormbringer wrote:

Re: LED fork lights
MOT man just says put a switch on them. Or disconnect them at MOT time.
Apparently wiring a red set into the brake light in fine, so I ordered a red set today. My bike will look like an early Christmas tree, but if it helps me be seen then I'll be happy.

Re: LED fork lights
It was an incident similar to that which made me install these.
If it stops one near miss then I'll be happy, my heart can't send many more
I'll post back when the red arrives and gets wired in, but that won't be for a while, its coming from China.
