wheel colour..

looking at pics of other cb500,s   i,ve noticed some have gold wheels,others (like mine)silver,is it year dependant? or an option when new?...dont know which i prefer...!

They changed to gold late in the run. 2001 maybe? Can't remember the exact year.

I got to say I didn't like the gold on mine I had them powder coated black.

I love the gold with the blue, but I think for my "beige" one (i.e. dakr silver tank and plastics w/ yellow stickers), I don't think the gold would work. Reckon it'd be great with black tank and plastics though, if the graphics were gold too. That has the potential to look pretty classy I reckon - kind of how you sometimes see street triples.

Only reason mine still has a topbox-rack is because the rack holds a LED-brake-light.

Yeah, I'd ditch the topox, but you're wrong all other counts!

I really like that - looks ace. But I swear to god if I saw it in the metal it would take a team of ten to stop me ripping that top box off and destroying it molecule by molecule until it was merely a collection of particles that would blow away on the breeze.

I'm not a fan of the aesthetics of top boxes, but for a bike that has to work for a living, the practicality is hard to beat. I've just fitted one to mine; sorry Trevor!

I have just installed the frames back to use the topbox now for the summer. Best way to go to the beach and keep things safe. Also thinking on doing a trip, maybe to the pyreness, and i will give it a great use. They are awfull, i agree, but of great usage.
Plus, and unlike side bags (which are way more cool), top boxes also dont widden your bike, so you can still push in the middle of traffic!

Yeah, I don't like topboxes. It's great having one the CB500 as I use the bike every day, but I'd never ruin my VFR with one.

I would love gold wheels on my CB500 as the vast majority of the rest of the bike's extra are gold. I applied wheel tape to mine to give the silver ones some extra pezaz!! seem to have worked. However I do like Mr Wilson's black powder coated ones, I would be interested to find out how much you got charged for this as could save me a lot of money buying second hand gold wheels if I fancied a change.

I like gold wheels on the red and blue bikes are the whole wheels gold on them colours?  Mine where gold and silver round the edge they were also pretty rough so I had them powder coated by a company near me £40 quid the pair. In eccles manchester. I can get the details if you wanted.

My tyres keep going down caused by corrosion on the rims and around the valves so it's time for a winter refurbishment. Just want them as original as possible 99 model just silver.
Do I go for paint,  powder coat or whatever? Any suggestions where?

I think it depends how much you want to spend: if you can clean and prepare the wheels well then you should be able to get a decent finish with some alloy wheel spray paint from Halfords or somewhere similar, this also shouldn't be too expensive.

Powder coating will be more expensive but will also probably involve some kind of media blasting, so you will have to do less work :) It might well last longer than paint too. It will be a tiny bit heavier and I'm not sure about the colour options (there might only be one choice of silver - depends on where you go I suspect).

Tbh I regularly have to check and inflate my tyres - over the course of a fortnight they'll definitely lose 5 psi here and there; some are worse than others - but they all do it. Is it because of their valves? Seating on a slightly uneven or corroded rim? Or some minute hole in the rubber itself? Or again, some combination? I don't know, and it *is* a bit irritating - however I'm resigned to it, and have been for a while. I think the point where I would be getting pissed off would be it it was losing more than 5psi a week, and certainly ten psi a week. That would stir me into some sort of action. Below that though and I just pick it up and deal with it as part of a weekly or bi-weekly POWDER check.

It's usually a combination of all those factors, in my experience:

* I believe that rubber is slightly porous but this is less than 5 psi a fortnight

* Valves cores can go wrong, but it is quite easy to replace them

* Valve stems will perish/crack (which is why you should change them and the cores when you change your tyres)

* Beads with corrosion present (or which have been corroded previously) don't always seal as well as they once did

* People say that alloy wheels can become 'porous' and sometimes are from the outset - I'm not sure how much I believe this!

Thankfully (fingers crossed!) my CB500 tyres/wheels have yet to have too many of these problems, other than a valve stem cracking in half (not something I would have wanted to happen at speed!). They seem to lose about 1-2 psi in the time that yours loose 5 psi.

Anyway, if it get worse (or you are interested to find out), the answer is the same as with a bicycle - dunk the whole thing in a bath/tank of water and try and see where the air is coming from, this might only be possible if more is leaking, but is worth a go if you have the wheel off anyway.

Almost any problem with the valves can be fixed by replacement, beads can be cleaned and you can ask to have 'bead sealer' applied when the tyre is fitted (black rubber gunk that fills in any remaining imperfections around the bead).
