Magnetic Tank Bag? Empty Magnetic Tank Bag?

Post by franito Thu 03 Jul 2014, 10:17 pm

I'm thinking about buying a small magnetic tank bag like the 'Givi EA106',

http://www.givi.co.uk/soft-bags/Tank-Bags/EA106

for Sunday ride-outs, i.e. carrying a small bottle of water and other small items. I am currently using a Dainese Belt Bag, i.e. bumbag, to carry my valuables, but of course this can't carry a waterbottle and I don't want to use my topbox for ride-outs.

I've never had or used a tank bag and would like comments as to if the said bag would be suitable for a CB500.

Many thanks.

Magnetic Tank Bag? Empty Re: Magnetic Tank Bag?

I think it would work ok but watch out for the magnets scratching the tank when the bag starts wearing (as happened on my bro's Daytona)
If you can get one at a good price the Bagster tank bags are brilliant. You get a tank cover which the bag clips onto.

Magnetic Tank Bag? Empty Avoiding scratches

Post by stormbringer Fri 04 Jul 2014, 10:43 am

I use a small tankbag similar to what you link to for moving stuff to/from work. Works a treat. Also have a bigger one that expands vertically - enough to make it difficult to see the instruments.

To avoid scratching  the paint I just make sure the backside (some sort of rubbery fabric) is clean.

Alternatively - I've tried it and it works a treat - you can get hold of wrap-film used for putting ads on cars. Put it on your tank and hey presto, only the film gets scratched Smile

On the CB, a BIG tankbag will double as sort of a windshield - you can tuck in behind it when on the motorway. This way, you can maintain a cruise speed of 90ish mph and still be relatively comfortable.

Magnetic Tank Bag? Empty Re: Magnetic Tank Bag?

Stormbringer,

I like your idea of using the tankbag as a windshield as I find the CB500 is very tiring on long high speed motorway rides, especially with a strong headwind, but can't find it in my heart to put a screen on her; I love her naked.  ;-)

Thanks.

I have one of the oxford bags which comes off the magnets to turn into a rucksack. Very useful for work and it expands too. When expanded, it hides the idiot lights - be sure to cancel indicators and let the clutch out slowly in neutral, but it's extremely useful. I recommend it. Also +1 for using it as a windshield.

i bought an oxford magnetic tank bag for touring but didnt get on with it. Found it quite obstructive and way too big. I am a bit of a shorty tho. I really rate just using the magnetic map reader holder only. Theres room for all the crap you'd like to have in your pockets, plus maps notes etc and you can rip it off and carry it about like a bag. I recon you could squeeze a few bigger things in there too.

It´s not huge.
You will eventually need/want more space.

I think the best solution is to get a expandable model.
I have one, i just dont know name and model.
But it´s similar to this one, only more basic!

Now that i remember i have some pics here.

http://www.cb500club.net/t2364p255-what-did-you-do-with-your-cb500-today

This is the best solution. Small size the bag stays very flat, almost unseen.
If you need it grows untill you cant read the speedos....Smile

Quite rational solution. Also, i dont care about scratches on my bike. It has 14 years, it has 160 000 km, so i just dont give a damm about looks.

Thanks for all the feedback.

On a different subject; today saw my wife, for the first time in her life ride a motorcycle (as pillion).

She enjoyed the experience, a 30/40 minute ride-out from Gibraltar to Jimena for lunch, but found it uncomfortable for her short little legs, i.e. getting her leg over the seat.  ;-)

Magnetic Tank Bag? Empty Re: Magnetic Tank Bag?

I have an Oxford X4 tank bag that I use for work. Holds my lunch and a couple of other small bits. The magnets seem strong enough but it's got a  strap for going around the handlebars as backup, but it's never moved so far.
