get a good brand name, but overall get the biggest fattest chain and lock you can. when you lock it up, go through the rear wheel and swing arm.

What Tricky said. Usually the price difference between one lenght or another in a given model is very small and the longer, the easier and more versatille it is to use.
Usually good chains come with good locks already, so might not need to buy a separate one (just don't buy one with circular keys).
A simple, large pin, disk lock is also handy.
A simple, no ignition kill, loud alarm is a huge bonus. I personally don't like engine kill alarms, because if your alarm decides to go nuts, you have a dead bike... especially bad if you're 3 days ride away from home.

Make sure it's Thatcham approved chain as it'll lower your insurance. I use a motrax guvna mg01 disc lock & for the £30 cost, the reduction in quotes was just plain silly.

After an attempted theft,I researched and found only two companies that make proper chains.
One I can't recall,the other is Pragmasis.
I bought thw 16mm version;very unlikely to be bolt-cropped.
(The 19mm version apparently can't be boltcropped.)
