Re: Head Gasket
Well... you can get one from Honda:
http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_motorcycle_parts_selection_pfk.php?block_01=13MY5WEA&block_02=E__0200&block_03=1612
You might be able to get it a bit cheaper than lings, worth trying your local Honda dealer or independent garage - you won't have to pay postage then.
Aftermarket gaskets are available but as you mentioned they are normally part of a kit, in addition, if you are going to bother to replace the head-gasket (assuming that is the problem) it is worth using a genuine Honda one to make sure the problem doesn't come back!

Re: Head Gasket
Living in Ireland it's a disaster trying to get parts and could take up to a Forthnight.I use Wemoto most of the time and just waiting for an email from them to see if I can get it seperately.Honda Distributors in Ireland are a joke keep hardly any stock now.

There are M&P on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB-500-PC32-1997-Replica-Cylinder-Head-Gasket-/261650615924?hash=item3ceb978e74
Although this is pretty much the same price as the 'real' gasket, plus I don't know what their postage to Ireland would be.
There is also CMSNL:
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500-1997-england_model1579/gasket-cylinder-h_12251my5601/
They charge very slightly less postage than lings, plus they would bill in euro so you wouldn't get stung for any currency charge/exchange rate stuff (hopefully!).
I am guessing that this headgasket is going to try and fix the starting problem you had the other day?

Re: Head Gasket
Dave Silver can get most parts which seem cheaper than a lot of Honda dealers, even if it's not listed on his website.
Well worth a call in my experience.
