Short answer - no one. No one is ever going to pay that price.

I sure hope he gets the asking price. The more that sell for this kinda price the better value for us

In what way? I'm not thinking of selling mine (plus it's not in that kind of condition), so whatever the market price I won't see that value.
I completely agree that this seller isn't going to get that price, but, from my experience with other older bikes, you really don't want the price to go up too much - you suddenly find that you can't get any spares and no one can afford to buy another bike if they crash.
Luckily Honda sold quite a few CB500 in this country and all over Europe so hopefully there is a natural limit to how high the price can rise.

Re: Nice bike but.....
It's a classified ad price from a wishfull dealer so chances are he's put a big mark up hoping someone will offer him half that.
I'd prefer the value to level out so it's not deprecating too much year by year. For that to happen & there still to be bargins to be found you need over priced chancers to keep a happy medium.

Hehe.
Actually, I've paid 2.400 quid for my CB500Y (2001). From a private seller. Without any guarantees. With a rundown chain kit and half-gone tyres.
The difference lies in nationality, you lucky bastards

Re: Nice bike but.....
Massively over priced but I guess you never know maybe new license holder who knows almost nothing about motorcycles comes across this, has heard CB500's are great beginner bikes, thinks it's a reasonable price (compared to their 12k car), thinks it's in great nick and rides off happily after knocking the price down a bit... maybe? I guess that's what the dealer hopes.
as for values i reckon most vehicles have a similar chart when it comes to value vs time: when they are sold they drop in value for the next 10-20 years but at some point demand will become greater vs supply (as the bike stops being made and then rate of destruction increases) and the value increases often to beyond the original price. (seen the price of original mini's lately?!)
So with that in mind our CBs are not being made any more and i'd imagine have a pretty high destruction rate right about now with old courier bikes coming to the end of their lives etc so i wouldn't be surprised if a low mileage one is more expensive in 5 years time compared to now (except this yellow example!). That said the numbers made would obviously be quite a big variable in this idea and I guess the CB500 was churned out in fairly large numbers and they are very reliable so make take longer for enough to die for the survivors to be actually worth anything significant - which is good for me because as much as I love it if it wasn't cheap to run I probably wouldn't have it!

Re: Nice bike but.....
Over here, they'd ask about 1400-1500 GBP for it. About 1750 GBP would be the price for a mint CB with less than 5000 mls on the clock.
I must admit that there are few CBs around that I would call "as good as new". This one seems to be very close, just look at the exhaust or the fork legs. Some buyers are after a perfect CB and are willing to pay for a good one -including me. But the bike is sixteen years old, three previous owners, the luggage rack is kind of ugly and the colour -well, it's what they liked in the Nineties. I like the pearl citron yellow (a quite rare painting), but the buyers prefer black or red ones.
I was laughing about the registration plate; "Aua" means "Ouch" in Germany

Fair enough price IMO
Usually, if you see a bike as overpriced as this, it's some dreamer of a private seller who just values the hours cleaning & pampering and doesn't really know the market, but a dealer??

Same year and similar mileage to mine, paid about 1100-1200 last year. At the time I felt I was paying a bit much but didn't care because I was bored of looking at wanted one there and then. I think 900-1000 is a fair price.... on this one i'd have to take into account cost of changing wheel colour but I'm sure some people won't care about that.

Dead easy. You MoT the thing, then you pay the import tax and finally you register the bike and put plates on it.
Paying import tax/registration fee is the scary part. To get an estimate, I've visited the danish Vehicle registry and taken a sample bike (1998, 78.000 km, price new 65.000 DKK) and made the import tax estimation on that.
Here's what I got:
Registration fee: 12.000 DKK equals 1200£. Add to this the cost of the bike, transportation to DK, plates etc.
Estimate, total cost: 1000£ + 1200£ + 300£ = 2500£.
Nope. We haven't found a way to get rich fast...
Anyone who knows what the CB sold for in the UK as new back in 1998?
In DK it sold for 65.000 DKK = 6.500£. Prices today are around the 2.200£ mark as can be seen here.

Damn... Next!

I just pulled out the paperwork from mine (guy i bought it from had it from new) - original receipt says he paid 3200 in 1999. This page reckons £3655 in 2003:

Re: Nice bike but.....
I've got a price list for 1997, according to that one a CB500 was sold for DM 8960,- (EUR 4576,- or GBP 3245,- according to today's Ratio). The CB500S has been sold for approximately DM 9500,- (EUR 4852,- or GBP 3441,-). VAT has been 15% when they sold the CB, today we've got 19%.

Re: Nice bike but.....
So, the level seems to hover around 3300 GBP in both UK and D. As opposed to DK, which is twice that.Flyingbrick wrote:...price list for 1997, according to that one a CB500 was sold for DM 8960,- (EUR 4576,- or GBP 3245,- )

Anyways, for even more fun, here's a clipping from the danish BMW price list.
Ain't that a bargain? M5 for a mere 200k £
