CB500 for sale soon
Hi all
I have a CB500V which i am thinking of selling soon. Without ferreting around in the garage in the dark the mileage is around 30k. Was bought as a winter hack a few years ago, but a change in job early 2015 means it has not been used much. MOT has ran out, battery will need replacing etc. Typical CB500, never let me down though was never the prettiest / tidiest bike in the stable.
My question is, do i sell her as she is now - i.e needing battery, mot etc
OR
Should i spend a little on her to get her fully road worthy
Thoughts please
Thanks

Re: CB500 for sale soon
If you're selling to a forum member, sell it as is. We tend to enjoy a bit of tinkering.
If you're selling it on eBay, get it running and MOTd, as you'll get your money back and some.
Where abouts in the UK are you?

Re: CB500 for sale soon
It's worth charging up the battery and seeing what happens: if it holds charge then you can probably easily get an MOT (assuming nothing else has gone wrong).
If you want the best price then get an MOT and put it on ebay - the ability to ride it away attracts people.
As sullivj says you can probably sell it as to someone (on here or otherwise) without an MOT but they won't pay as much...
For example:
Here is a cheap battery from Wemoto. It is £20 - probably £25 with postage (no idea if it is any good, but you don't care 'cos you're selling :)
An MOT is £30, assuming you don't need any work.
A tank of petrol is £20.
So, if you are lucky, you will have a legally 'ride-away' bike for £75 assuming you can deal with anything else that needs fettling after sitting in a garage for a while - it will go for more than 75 quid extra!
EDIT, ADDITIONAL: If you really want to get top dollar for it then do all of this AND wait for a month and then put it on ebay at the beginning of March when the weather picks up a bit ;)

Re: CB500 for sale soon
I agree with what the others have written above. My Dad and his mate's experience of selling a beautiful little ZZR250 that they brought back from the dead tells me that people don't like buying a bike when they cannot ride it - i.e. due to the weather or the condition of the bike. This tends to mean that you don't get as much £££ as you otherwise would. As soon as the sun pops its head up and people see all their mates on bikes, the demand for a bike bike will increase. A fully MOT'd and rideable bike allows them to hop on a bike with little relative hassle.

Re: CB500 for sale soon
Without mot you're looking at about £400 if it's a disc (which yours is) or £300 for a drum. for £30 you're increasing the amount a lot.

Re: CB500 for sale soon
Hi,
as said really, however, an mot'd bike will be easier to sell on, means the tyres, brakes etc will be basically sound, even if the new owner fancies a bit of spannering.
Btw I've resurrected 4 cb5's from similar or worse start points, pricing is random.

Re: CB500 for sale soon
Thanks for your repsponses guy.
Think the best plan will be to wheel her out, pop a new battery on her, give her a 'home' service before getting an mot done.
Do this over the next month ready for March / April and see what she sells for.
If i find I am not getting the time to tinker with her etc might advertise her on here first 'as is'.
Keep you posted
Thanks again

Re: CB500 for sale soon
Not really thought about price to be honest.
Someone above suggests as is with no MOT (disc model) £400
I would be looking for more than that, shes a good little work horse.
I have 6 days off as of Thursday, will pull her out the garage and give her a look over, maybe put a couple of pictures up. I do have a brand new set of tyres to be fitted, sure i have some services bit n bobs too in a box somewhere.
1 weekends work and an MOT, who knows maybe aim for between £700-£800 (or is that too optimistic)

Re: CB500 for sale soon
UPDATE
Mileage is 26846
All lights work fine
Pads front and rear fine
Tyres - Rear plenty of life left in it, Front has a split it in it - Needs replacing. (I have a new set from a forum member)
Chain a sprocket - covered in wax, sure removing and soaking and regreasing would return it to normal. It is a regina chain and sprockets fitted with a split link. I prefer these to allow easy removal and refitting.
Needs a new battery
Needs an MOT
This bike was my winter hack so cosmetics to me were not important.
Flaky paint on mudguard. RH fork leg lower has some white powdery type of surface corrosion on it. Front sprocket cover, silver paint peeling off. Radiator shrouds, the bike has a large touring screen fitted, when i first fitted it, poorly positioned brackets meant that when the bike was on full lock the brackets hit the shrouds and snapped little bits off. About the size of a 10p piece, same both sides. Mirrors, when i got the bike it had very poor mirrors, replaced them with some similar to that of the CBF500/600. Build quality not great, surface corrosion to backs of mirrors and arms.
The bike has honda rack and cheap givi copy top box fitted. Heated grips wired straight to battery - contoller wrapped in cling film because the seal on it wasnt great. Touring screen. Hand guards of my CB1300 plus some homemade brackets to make them sturdy. (This was to mke my handle bar muffs secure)
I have some spare bits n bobs, though havent found them yet in the garage.
Will take some pics and maybe a video later.
For saying she hadnt been started for a good while, slaved to a car battery she fired up after a couple of turn overs. Bit of choke for a couple of minutes and she settled down nicely.

Nice bike mate, vid is honest, I'd get that on eBay in a month and don't let it go too cheap, good load of parts with it, and worth a bid or two, unless you get a fair offer beforehand.
