Exhaust Downpipes Empty Exhaust Downpipes

Post by Fair Weather Rider Thu 09 Mar 2017, 3:32 pm

My collars on down pipes from cylinder head have rotted away.
unlike single down pipes you can't slide a new collar over the end.
Just to be clear it's the collar that bolt the pipes to cylinder head.
Is there a fix for this?

Cheers.

PS been out for a nice ride today.

Yes indeed. Just buy a new exhaust system and that solves the problem.

If you want a harder method, cut your down pipes off remove the collars, then put new collars on them and reweld it all back together

I'm sure that is doable, but where to get / or how to make the collars ?
If you succeed, post something here, as we all love to save money.

I'm looking into a solution for this dilemma as I have fallen for this a few times over the years.
I'm thinking about making split collars if I can't find some suitable ones readily available from another model.

Yes, it seems a shame to buy new down pipes, when it's just the collars that are "Naff" and the pipes are perfectly good.
I will keep trying to find a solution.

Happy days.

Split collars could be complicated, but if you made one thick enough you could just have it in two halves and bolt it together, like this:

Sorry about the bad drawing. You could even make it square which would be less hassle.

The ones that I'm going to be trying are like the Kawasaki ones used on the GPX750. They're interlocking but cast aluminium and crack at much more than finger tight in my experience. However mine will be made from 8mm stainless steel so a lot more robust.

I know roughly what you mean - I thought a bit about how to make them when my ones gave up the ghost, however the rest of my downpipes were also knackered so I didn't think for long! (plus stainless pipes seem like such a much better idea)

Of course it's a better idea but much more expensive.
