Ulez Testing
For the first time today, I rode the CB inside the now massive ULEZ zone and had to pay the £12.50.
I am thinking of going to the National Emissions Test Centre in Bow to try to get the CB through. Apparently most things are passing, its just that NOx was not measured at the time of manufacture.
Anyone done this yet for the CB or anything for that matter? £175 is a serious amount of money that could be spent on a new set of tyres or the like.
Still, I like the idea of the little Honda beating the system and going merrily about it's day. It might even revert to being the workhorse bike again if I sell the FZ6 and replace it with a VFR750...

Re: Ulez Testing
I had a 1998 tested failed - got cat fitted and passed . £175 test, £110 cat and retest £75 approx. From what I gathered older CB's more likely to pass. Worth it for me as a commuter but still a lot of cash for a bike that's worth about a grand on a good day....

Re: Ulez Testing
It's good to know that if a ULEZ restriction comes in locally and I need to make my bike, a '99 CB, compatible with the restrictions then it can indeed be done.
Is there much noticeable change in weight or performance on your CB @BTBailiff?
Also, anyone any pictures of what it would look like on a CB having the required Cat fitted? I'm imagining a collector type box somewhere on the exhaust.

The cat fits at the end of the downpipes within the pipe where it joins the silencer. You don't see it.. no weight to it . I thought it did slightly impact performance. But not difficult to remove if so inclined and you have an angle grinder......or swap back to a spare set of downpipes post test...

Thanks for the reply. I am a bit disappointed to hear that your bike failed. I was assuming that they would pass. £175 turned into £350 for you which makes the decision a bit harder. Especially since I already have a post 2007 commuter to use for more central journeys.

Out of interest, do you have the data sheet for why your bike failed the initial test? It would be interesting to see if it was close or not

I'm very surprised that it was possible to fit a cat to a carburetted engine. I had thought that a cat needed to work in conjunction with a lambda sensor and fuel injection to control mixture at tick-over to about 2000rpm.

I am sure is possible to get some benefit from a cat, especially if you only need to improve the emissions slightly. As a passive part, it should impart some benefit, even if it does make the bike run like garbage

Not as disappointed as me . Hoped it would pass but overall less hassle than sourcing another reliable commuter. Re data sheet don't have it to hand did test a couple of months ago. I live on border of ulez so will get my monies worth in a couple of months.

The cbf500 has a cat built into the silencer if my memory serves me correctly.

Re: Ulez Testing
Has anyone done any research into what make and model of cat can be retro fitted? Also, can they be fitted with band clamps like the rest of the exhaust or is welding necessary?
