Avon tyre problem
Hi all, back in the summer my old neighbour who runs a 96 cb500 asked me to look on't tinterweb to see if I could find some tyres for his bike...He usually asks me as he has no computor and i'm happy to help him out.
So... as he normally buys Michelin Actives I looked for a price for a pair for him...only to be told that there was no stock at all the online places I use. OK he says what else is out there then..Well, I said I've found some Avons and their cheaper too!, great he says get them ordered!
Ordered them from Tyretec who I've used many times before and they arrived 48hrs later.
My neighbour Graham then slips his wheels round to the local fitter who fits and balances them perfectly-but when Graham collects the wheels the fitter shows him there's a fault in the rear tyre.
The fitter hadn't noticed until he was balancing the wheel
The steel cords that should be under the tread have broken thru to the surface, which if left unnoticed could have caused a catastophic blow out when the steel cords had rusted thru
I got straight on the phone to Tyretec who were as shocked to see the pics as we were and very professionally dealt with a return of the tyre to Avon and a replacement was sent to the fitter as soon as was possible, I think it took about 10 days as the bloke at Avon was on his jollies
Tyretec were astonished that no one else could deal with this in his absence
All in all we got it sorted but I couldn't help thinking that not only had the quality inspection failed at Avon it had also slipped thru at the supplier too.
Oh..the verdict on the Avons?.... Graham says they are the best tyres he's had on the CB (He's tried them all)
Stay safe folks,
JT

Re: Avon tyre problem
Were they Avon Roadriders? They had a bit of a quality issue a few years ago (the tyres ended up developing cracks a bit quickly).
I had some on my bike and they handled OK - possibly nothing to write home about, but no problems.
IME new tyres almost always feel better than the worn out ones - the bike actually goes around corners!

Re: Avon tyre problem
The date stamp on the tyres showed that they were manufactured a couple of months prior delivery, so to me it was poor manufacturing quality in this case..
I have heard a few people have had duff Avon's over the years..my mate back in the day had a front Avon which delaminated the tread away from the carcass on his Yam Fzr750 which looked scary as he was a proper fast guy on it.
Take care folks,
JT

These things do happen. As long as they were OK about having them back then it's not too bad.
