Clunking/knocking noise
Hi everyone,
My bike has started to make a weird clunking/knocking noise from somewhere around the back.
My thoughts are it could be chain related as the chain and sprockets need replacing. I tightened the chain the other day which is when it started and the chain is now loose.
If not could it be anything to do with the clutch because the lever is quite loose and the noise stops when I pull the clutch in.
Any speculation would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much!

Sounds like the chain making the noise; when they're worn out they make one hell of a racket!

an old bike of mine made a kind of wheeeee clonk, wheeeee clonk. The clonk was the tight spot of the chain coz i had tightened too tight yet it still looked loose in other parts of the run.

Hi,
A worn drive chain and sprockets can lead to all sorts of noises. Best thing to try which will confirm is find a quiet road and ride to about 20mph then pull the clutch in and roll ... if the noise is still there its the chain and sprockets (and maybe sprocket carrier bearing). Ive seen some well abused CB500's and some well looked after ones and the engines are rarely noisey...

The engine runs sweet as a nut (of course it does its a Honda!!).
The noise only happens when its in gear which is why I thought it might be clutch.
I've found out today that the bolt that acts as a pivot for the clutch lever is broken. Is it possible this has anything to do with it?
I really appreciate all of your help guys.

Does it do when in all gears? And with the clutch in or just out?

Re: Clunking/knocking noise
Most noises from the chain change in speed as the speed of the bike changes speed, so this is one if you can tell if the noise *is* from the chain.
On a slightly different note the CB500 has a 'known issue' with a clutch rattle when in neutral - this dissappears when the clutch is pulled in, it isn't a problem.

Once upon a time my bike started making a horrible rattleing noise, worse at about 4000rpm.
I was quite worried until I realised that one of the little fairings on the radiator was loose and rattling around!

Re: Clunking/knocking noise
rattles can be really difficult to locate some times. new fazers seem to have a really annoying rattle around the clocks somewhere
