K&N air filter
i wanted a k&n but price for a cb500 went from £33 to £50. after alot of research found out a cx500 deluxe 1979-81 is same filter within few mm.in fact after trimming 3mm of rubber off end seal they exact same.it seems the only thing k&n had changed is the cb filter has a ring of foam for the seal and the cx has a rubber ring for a seal but as i say its a few mm too big just need to trim off with stanly knife.price of a cx one is WAIT 4 IT ---- £15.56. ebay shop called e-parts-centre/k&n part HA-0700.somes times feel we being ripped off .[img][/img]CHEERS ps got pics of match:lol:

Re: K&N air filter
Here is the info:
This is the 'proper' K&N filter for the CB500:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=HA-5094
Here is the CX500 filter:
http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=HA-0700
As you can see from the two pages above, the dimensions of the filters are very similar apart from the bottom rubber ring (which can be removed, as mentioned above).
Sounds like a result to me!

Fitted a K&N last night. A breeze to just shave off a couple off mm of rubber. K&N trying to rip people off when the two products are pretty much the same thing!

I should think so, it's still the same filter but with a slightly different body.

Re: K&N air filter
Thanks very much for this - saved me a few quid - not much more than a standard filter!
Fitted fine with the requisite shaving off of a couple of millimeters with a stanley knife - very easy to do.
Cheers

Re: K&N air filter
I am just about to order a new filter for my bike
Does the K&N need any mod to the bike (e.g. jets) or can I just bung one in as a direct replacement for the standard?

Nope it will go straight on without any mods.

Re: K&N air filter
I know this is a while on but I bought a K&N filter in Jan 13. Bike seemed to be a lot quicker across the whole rev range rather than just a surge above 7,000 rpm. However it seemed to then have surging around 3,500 revs which was annoying when filtering. Got the bike serviced with Valve check at 16,000 miles which was about a month after I fitted the K&N and then had the bike dyno'd. The air fuel mixture was way out at 19 to 1 when it should have been 13 to one(apparently). So the dyno gas check showed red from tick over. Refitted the OE Honda and the dyno guage showed green thru the whole rev range. Mechanic said I never fit these! My questions then,
The bike is running lean will this damage it?
Why do K&N say no adjustments necessary when clearly the mixture is not right?
Other concern is whole valve then carb set up was done using the K&N but it now has the Honda back in, so will that negate or at least mean carb set up should be re-done? Certainly using choke seems to upset the bike occasionally when it never did before.

Re: K&N air filter
Was the one you bought the cx500 one? If so, I wonder if they are different.
Running lean is bad news for an engine as it will be running too hot.

Re: K&N air filter
Mine was specific to the CB 500.As for running hot, won't the water Cooling cover that? CB's I have read all seem to run cool at least according to the temp gauge.

Re: K&N air filter
It is always said that running lean is very bad news as it will burn out the exhaust valves.
Just been googling it to see why - turns out it is the exhaust gas temperature that is a problem when too lean

Re: K&N air filter
I'm quite surprised to hear it was running lean, mine was literally a straight swap and it's been running sweet ever since! Slight bit of popping on the overrun since I fitted the Laser exhaust (which was a couple of years after fitting the K&N).

Re: K&N air filter
Mine did run fine with the K&N and has the original exhaust on. No pops or bangs but a little surge'y around 3,500 rpm. It was on the dyno with the exhaust gases being monitored that it showed lean at 19 to 1. Well I saw that on the computer dials on the dyno but that may have been the max on the dyno machine, so could have been worse maybe? Not sure what dyno machines go up to and as posted elsewhere SBS never sent me the report, just said never fit K&N which conflicts with other posts in the forum. Bike has steadily got worse from that service that included valve clearances. So maybe a carb clean / strip is needed. It is not really bad, just annoying though when filtering thru traffic. Get new chain and sprockets this week and due for an oil/filter change so will check the plugs etc as well to see if running rich or lean and then maybe put the K&N back in.

Re: K&N air filter
Hello Guys,
I have a good price on a KN filter for the cb500, but there´s one thing im curious about.
My cb5 is from 2002.
If you go on the KN website, theres no air filter for it. Only for cbs untill 99.
My question. Does the 99Cb filter fits my bike? Is it the apropriate one?
I believe it will, it makes sense to me that way. I just like to hear it from you.
I don´t know other guys with cb or mechanics who i can ask this out....
Tks for info.

Yes, I believe that the air filter will fit any year of CB500.

Doesn't have the K&N number on the webpage but I called up before I ordered and they confirmed it was an HA-0700.
