Re: Coil upgrade
Thanks Andy, I live in France. What I was wondering was which are the best pencil coils to use.

Re: Coil upgrade
Yes, bought four for fifty €, fitted and they do make the bike seem smoother and more responsive, need more nice weather to kep up my scientific analysis regimen of back road "point & squirt" technology!

Hi,
Do all these have similar connectors? Is it possible to mix e.g. 929 coils and 1000rr wiring harness with connectors?

Re: Coil upgrade
I've recently experienced 2 coil failures. https://cb500.forumotion.com/t6347-idling-problem-with-video-link
Apparently this has not happened to others who have done this upgrade?
Anyway I'm wondering if the coil gets too hot inside the cyl head when the upper part is plugged??
How is the upper part in original CBR installation? Is it plugged to prevent water and muck but also cooling air flow entering the bore??

Re: Coil upgrade
Not to disregard Melitos' above query, I do not know the answer to the above and I also have a question re this upgrade.
Does anyone have a dummies' guide for this upgrade?
Could a novice such as I undertake this mod at home?
I'm wondering whether having a set of Cb500 coils to work on / upgrade would be preferable to trying to do it in situ on the bike itself, i.e.

Re: Coil upgrade
there is no technique but to follow the steps indicated here, knowing that one is not one of those who destroy everything they touch ........ that there is.
it has a greater degree of difficulty removing the original coils

Re: Coil upgrade
Hi ANDYC do you still sell the stick coils? I would like to buy some from you.

Re: Coil upgrade
Regretfully I've had to abandon this upgrade. Initially the bike did run cleaner, but started to misfire a couple of weeks ago when I was on my way to the MOT ! I thought it was contaminated petrol as the bike hasn't had a lot of use recently ( and bio percentage increases !) I tried draining the tank and using fresh Super grade and thought I had the problem licked.
However on a run last saturday the bike went on to one cylinder and then refused to run at all so I had to call a friend with a trailer to come and rescue.
I wasn't looking forward to having to do a carb strip, so I thought of going back to the standard coil. When I did this, the bike started right up immediately and has run smoothely ever since.
I assume that the coil sticks just don't like the increase in vibration on the twin cylinder engine.

Re: Coil upgrade
This is exactly the same problem I've had with mine (fireblade coils)but then I striped the carbs thinking there was some blockage in the jets. I've now wrecked them trying to move the pilot air screws so I'm after a new set of carbs.
I did try a different set of coils but then again I may have put the original ones back in by mistake as I was rushing.

Re: Coil upgrade
I suggest the fixation that I indicate embracing the cylinder head cover tunnels from the outside, which fixes them more without vibrating

Re: Coil upgrade
Mine were well fixed in there with some bits of rubber drive belt at the top to stop them jiggling about. The coils were off a cbr954rr I think. I'll try the other pair when I've sorted the carbs.

Hmmm.... Interesting.
I have a set of @ANDYC 's coils waiting to be installed. I'll be reading this thread.

Re: Coil upgrade
I've used them for 60k+ miles with no issues, on race bikes aswell as road bikes.
