7,000 miles seems a little unlikely...
Is that oil on the side of the engine, or water from the wash?

Re: Post a photo of your bike!
Here is mine. I noticed that my exhaust muffler looks a bit different from other '96-models, which have led me to assume mischief on the part of the previous owner. It seems to be just a piece of polished aluminium welded on top of the original black muffler. If I take it off some day I'll probably find something unpleasant. Any ideas? I bought it six years ago with 16000 km (allegedly) on the clock.

It's aliiiive!
...After almost a year off the road following coolant system drama and a broken collarbone too.
Original exhaust taken off, completely rotten, radiator crumbled off, fan the same. Replaced with a stainless job off here for 50 quid, a new delkevic rad, secondhand fan in great nick, system drained, flushed and refilled. Mot this morning, passed with no advisories.
Plenty to do still, fork springs, shocks , brake calipers refurbed, new mirrors....and on and on. Great bike, had a crazy ride to and from mot in mental weather handled no problem by the CB.

Re: Post a photo of your bike!
Bike when I bought it a few weeks ago: [url=https://servimg.com/view/19734264/2]
I am away so cannot post a current pic until I get back. Suffice it to say I have fitted the basic TEC shocks, an OEM front disk, new radiator & air box (looks the same), new front mudguard (the one in the pic is broken), new number plate, and correct Givi plate for top box as I have a set of Trekker luggage. I have a better fairing to fit. So it does not look very different than in this picture, though it is tidier when you get close.
It is highly original for a 108,000 mile bike and I want to keep it that way, so am thinking of fitting an OEM silencer. Other than that, the bigest problem is the tatty engine--not sure how to polish / paint it?

Looks good, even before you've made it better!
The engine can be a bit of a pain. There isn't much you can do to make the peeling/knackered paint look better other than painting over it.
If you are going to do this then the best thing to do is take the engine out of the frame, clean it all up, sand/roughen up and attack with appropriately coloured spray can of engine paint. It can be a fair old job to do it properly - not difficult but takes a while, that is, assuming you don't have problems getting the engine out ( snapping exhaust studs and siezed engine mounting bolts are the traditional problems). I'm not trying to put you off doing it, but it would be unfair not to mention the possible problems.
You can paint the side covers while the engine is in the frame but you need to mask the edge well and cover up the rest of the bike. I did mine with some 99p pound-shop silver spray paint and it didn't look too bad, but then they looked so bad before almost anything was going to look better.
