Rattling Gear Box? Empty Rattling Gear Box?

Post by thefridge1980 Tue 16 Oct 2012, 9:03 pm

Hi all. Looking for help with this problem with my CB500.

I have owned this bike for about three weeks and I have been totally happy with my purchase until yesterday. It seems to have developed a rattling/clanking notice which is coming from the engine/gear box area. It sounds like something is very loose or broken in there somewhere but if I pull the clutch in the noise stops and also if I shut the throttle and coast it stops.
There are no strange noises when the bike is idling and noise doesn't get worse as the revs go up.

I'm quite handy with tools but have no knowledge of engines/gear boxes etc so please be gentle with the jargon Wink

Cheers

Sounds like something to do with your clutch, a loose bolt or basket would be my guess.
Its good news for you if it is, because it would be a relatively simple fix, certainly as far as strange engine noises go!
Ive not been on a CB5 long enough to know all their foibles so there may be a known clutch issue someone else could point you towards.

But getting in there to have a look would be simple enough, you would just need to renew the clutch cover gasket and engine oil (you may even be able to work with the oil in if the bike is on its side stand/leaned over)

I would advise against using the bike until you have a clearer idea of what the cause is, you dont want to make a cheap problem into an expensive one Wink

Cheers Hario. I had a look today but it looks like one of the bolts has been rounded off. i think i'll drop around the local garage to see what they say.

Howdy,
I'd be very interested in the outcome - mine does the same; there's a dull clatter from the clutch area that stops when the clutch is pulled in.

It's always done it and it's only noticeable when stationary (I think! can't hear it when I'm riding! Very Happy )

I'd put it down to the something worn in the clutch basket area - pulling in the clutch stopping it suggests it's downwind of the drive side.. but what do I know! scratch

Anyhow, good luck with it and let us know what you find out.

Best start polishing my spanners, just in case! affraid

If this only happen at idle (when not under load) then it is a common CB500 thing - they all do it! (all the ones I've heard, anyway)

I believe the OPs problem was slightly different - it happens when *not* idleling and hence is probably more worrying.

good to see that these engines are long lasting. Like I said elsewhere, getting a cb5 wasn't exactly planned, more a stroke of very good fortune! Very Happy Very Happy
