Fuel gage (repost from the old forum)
Hey
I just bought a CB last Saturday. I'm waiting for them to fit the restriction. I noticed when I was looking at it that it didn't have a fuel gage. I could probably get used to this, but it'd be useful if there was any way to fit one myself. It's a CB500S 2002 model. Does this bike have a reserve tank? How do you know when it's running out of gas? How many miles do you tend to get to a tank? Is the choke manual or automatic? And is it possible to fit a fuel gage myself?
Thanks

I can live with this. How many miles do you get to the tank usually?

I get between 160 and 170 miles before switching to reservere. If I find a petrol station soon then I usually fill up with about 16ish litres of fuel, so that's about 45mpg.
The most important thing is to put the tap back to 'normal' after filling up or you end up having a nasty shock.....

mileage
I ride my 2003 model for my daily commute duel carriage way / back lanes and some courier work, i can fill up at 190 miles and i get average 55 mpg. If ridden a bit more careful i have got 60-65 mpg. i have a full screen on mine and a 48 ltr topbox as well. Like what was said, an awesome choice of bike , i also regularly spray acf50 on mine and also use this stuff as a chain lube and my bike looks and runs brilliant.

good choice
Hi,
welcome along, and good choice of bike. Main thing as you are a new rider, just ride and enjoy the thing. CB5's are pretty bombproof.
Choke is on the left bar just in from the grip. You'll need it in winter, perhaps not in summer. Best not to ride with the choke on/partly on. Yes there is a reserve, you turn the tap by your left knee. When you go onto reserve the bike will feel flat for a mile or so then feel like its stopping/losing power, practice finding the fuel tap as you do this on the move.
As said, no fuel guage and you soon won't fret over it. Set the trip meter (on left of clocks) to zero after every fill up and at 160 miles, fill up. The old forum had an extended discussion on economy, the less speed-changing on your route, the more economical.

Yes the other thread was quite comprehensive. I said that I got 45mpg, which is a lot worse than others here - I suspect this is becuase my commute consists almost entirely of stop-start and going round traffic, so I'm not surprised that I get crap enconomy.

i get to around 200miles before i need to fill up - recently i fitted an after market pipe and the mileage improved slightly - 15.2ltrs at 203miles, no idea that translates in to mpg tho...

MPG
Just read in MCN on how to get a good idea of MPG.
Take note of the miles before filling up
Then zero the miles on the clock
Fill the bike up to the brim
Take note of the litres
Divide by 4.55
Then divide the miles by the answer
EXAMPLE
5.8 LITRES DIVIDED BY 4.55 = 1.27
MILES 70 DIVIDED BY 1.27 = 55 MPG
