Back into biking - bought a CB500S to commute
Hello,
After a few years break from biking, I have bought myself a 2002 CB500S and I'm now using it to commute to work most days. It's the bike I've wanted for quite some time and I'm very pleased with it.
I've only had the bike for a couple of weeks and almost straight away I thought the speedo was under-reading. After timing myself travelling a constant speed along the measured mile on the A650 bypass, it appears that when my speedo reads 50mph, I'm actually doing ~56mph.
I thought that speedos were allowed to over-read by 10%, but are not allowed to under-read at all?
Has anyone else had a similar problem with their speedo?
Is it possible to adjust (re-callibrate) it?
Thanks
Jon

True - your speed isn't supposed to under-read.
Have you checked the cable over and given the bottom part of it an oiling?
It is also possible that the speedo drive is knackered, I'm not sure how you are supposed to tell when this has happened.

It could be the cable binding as ET says; I've only ever known them snap to be honest.

The odometer is reading spot-on, so I presume the cable drive is ok.
It's just the speed that is under-reading. I tested it this morning against GPS and it's consistently reading under by 15%, up to 70mph (not tested it over this).
I thought that maybe the magnet inside the speedo has become weak with age, this would account for the under-reading.
After looking on ebay for a replacement set of clocks, I noticed that there were 3 of them for sale and all have different speed graduations to mine:
mine shows, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50....120 mph
the ones on ebay show 20, 40, 60, 80...140mph.
Are there different ones? Maybe mine is wrong... Both seem to show ~62mph when the needle points straight upwards.

Mine reads all the even numbers (1994 CB500R). Could it be that the clocks on yours have been replaced at some point?

Re: Back into biking - bought a CB500S to commute
I've only had the bike for 2 weeks, so one of its previous owners may have changed the clocks sometime in the past.
The bike itself is a 2002 model, maybe the clock dial design changed at some point, I don't know. The one I have does seem to match the one shown in Honda's microfiche parts list.
Anyone know if the speedo is adjustable inside (maybe an adjustment screw on the needle return spring)?
