question
My question is,as a possible future owner, how well does the cb twin shock cope with bumpy roads?. I currently ride a BMW F650 single (carb model)and wondering how it would compare.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: question
Welcome to the club mate!
No problems that I've ever noticed on lumpy roads.
Upgrading the rear shocks to Hagons is a popular mod and you may want to fit progressive springs and a slightly heavier fork oil.
I've got the Hagons on the rear but standard forks and it handles the bumps pretty well.

Re: question
Thanks for prompt reply. I've toured Wales and England and you don't really have bumpy roads. At least none that I could find and I've been to Dragon Rally,London, Essex,Yorkshire etc. I live in Ireland and off the main roads (B roads in UK) things are completely different.

Re: question
The CB5 isn't too bad at bad roads, however, as you mention, the roads in Ireland are worse than here in the UK, so we may not know what you mean by bad :)
I would suggest that you try and get a ride on one and take it for a spin on a 'bad' road...
As suggested, the original shocks are often done-for, so don't write it off too quickly.
There is at least one other person on this forum from Ireland, so if you are lucky they might turn up with an opinion...

Re: question
Thanks for that. The main roads here are no problem, when you want to go on the side/by roads the fun starts, though I'm sure plenty of people have driven cb5s on roads much worse than any we are likely to come across in the Uk or Ireland.

Re: question
I love to ride my CB500 on horrible gravelly, potholed back lanes, it copes just fine. I've got the suspension all set up as stiff as can be, and 20W fork oil - I just take more weight on the pegs if I'm riding over really gnarly stuff.

Check out my project... have already been to Dakar on one!
Re: question
I find that here , where roads can have potholes right fornenst sleeping policemen, my front forks are the bits which take the pounding. One seal has recently given up the ghost but I'm not sure that heavier fork oil is the right way to go when I replace it. I saw "Delboy's Garage" posting on seal replacement on Youtube where oils are blended to give the weight you want. So a compromise is in store, I'm going for 12.5W and will see how that performs. The backs can look after themselves.
