I have just serviced my bike and done valve clearances, cleaned the air filter, fitted new spark plugs and balanced the carbs and its never run better. Got bt45's at 36 front 38 rear. The best I ever got was 57mpg, normally I hit reserve at about 150 miles.

Re: Fuel consumption
Yeah I tried bp ultimate and I reckon it ran worse, Shell V power seemed about the same as normal, maybe a bit better. But then sometimes it seems like the bike runs better just after being filled up if it was on reserve? It's hard to tell, maybe I just imagine it.

Re: Fuel consumption
I've only done a measly 850 miles - since I bought my 2002
CB500S 15 months ago - over a mixture of town riding and
motorway and I find I've averaged 51.2 mpg.
Worst was 48.3 and best 54.5 at fill-ups.

Re: Fuel consumption
I checked this again and ran the bike full to reserve - all in town pretty throttle happy and got exactly 45.5 mpg.

Re: Fuel consumption
I got 67 miles to the gallon from my last fill up, I only got 60 the tank before. The same sort of riding, the same roads, but a big difference.
I may just monitor where I get my fuel, see if that makes a difference to my consumption.

I got 57mpg on my last check. Is not great but not bad for my style of riding.

Re: Fuel consumption
May be of interest to some of you on this thread..... on my RTW trip attempt 3 years ago on an old 96 model cb500.. Very steady riding gave me up to 68ish mpg (fully..and I mean FULLY loaded)
On my next attempt on a similar machine http://atwi80m.blogspot.co.uk/ I have already put a 14t front sprocket on... and really do hope to hit near 80mpg?
Will post on the website when I test it soon!

Re: Fuel consumption
Hi,
Having just done my third fill-up since getting my CB500 back in early November, I can confirm that with my rather stop-start London commute I am only getting around 40mpg.
Not that impressive, but I can live with it for the smile put on my face when do get the opportunity to open the throttle...

Re: Fuel consumption
Well lubing the front brake caliper slide pins with silicone grease and using shell V power increased mileage to 42 mpg- and increase of 4 mpg.

Re: Fuel consumption
Wow! Huge variation in economy here. Since servicing my bike, the last tank of fuel I was rather throttle happy, including a blast with my brother riding pillion, absolutely ragging it, and I got 57mpg. This tank I'm riding it more gently to see how much better economy I get. Won't be great though because my commute is only 20 miles - short journeys are relatively wasteful of fuel, with my last CB500 I had 75 mpg a few times, from 100+ mile journeys.

Re: Fuel consumption
Resurrecting this old chestnut again....
Finally got around to checking mpg after recent 425 mile trip, packed top box, tent, roll bag etc. Never got much over 80mph except for a bit on some A roads (which was, maybe, 50% of the trip) and quite a bit of slow riding in small towns and on some really crap rural roads too.
Works out average 68.73 miles per gallon. Had to check the sums again - I knew she was good but, fook me, not that good!

Re: Fuel consumption
How can you manage that?! Getting about 44mpg here, never more, bike pulls like a champ and is in good shape, bt45 rears are gone in about 2000 miles.

Re: Fuel consumption
Long rides make all the difference to economy. My last bike was wearing out, was getting so I had to switch to reserve at as little as 180 miles, but when I rode it from Weymouth to Nottingham in a day, was showing 220 miles when I put on reserve! That was a fully loaded ride, throwing it around in twisty lanes as well...

I suppose it's cos she's just in great running nick, or at least, as near perfect as I can get her. She's completely stock with only 16k miles and was minded like a child before I got her. Had an old wise bike mechanic mate of mine check over the fuel system a while back and he fettled the carbs, think that helped too.
And maybe I just ride like an old codger...

I average 55-60mpg. 104,000 miles, ride it hard, mixture of twisties, town and open road.

Re: Fuel consumption
I normally get 60mpg, which at current prices (about £1.33 a litre) is less than 10p a mile.
On a 400 mile round trip to Wales and back I got 70mpg. That's half motorway, half 50-60mph A-roads with a few towns and villages along the way.
Honestly, if I were only getting 30-40mpg, I'd be ditching the CB5 for something with more ooomph. Mpg is the reason I keep it around.

Re: Fuel consumption
As I have probably said before, I get about 45 mpg when going to and from work (in town, starting, accelerating and then stopping repeatedly) but have got more than 60 mpg on a long run, not hanging around, but not too mad.
So I think it varies a lot with the riding conditions and how much stopping/accelerating you have to do.

I get about 55.5MPG (5.09 l/100k) from mine. I am a very conservative driver normally and I have seen reports of 35-65MPG quoted, although what people are doing to get the extremes, I do not know!

Re: Fuel consumption
I can't work it out im mpg any more as the pumps won't co-operate with the units. However to mix standards if not metaphors, I always get 10 miles per litre from tank fill to tank fill no matter how I ride. I'm using a K&N though that doesn't seem to have made much if any difference to the fuel consumption.

Re: Fuel consumption
I have to ride consistently really carefully and speed up ever so slowly on my CB5 to get anywhere near the mpg I get in my Volvo V70 auto. I don't always bother but it is much more fun on the bike.
