Wind noise/buffeting on the CB500S?
I've been struggling a bit with helmet wind noise and earplugs etc.
I'm really not a happy bunny, I'm sure I've buggered my hearing since buying this bike.
Anyway I was blaming the helmet, so I was very surprised today when I tried sitting bolt upright and everything went quiet, ducking down makes it worse or no improvement really.
I don't have much experience with other bikes to compare it with really, I rode a nekked Bandit once and felt like mr. bobblehead so didn't like that.
I don't get pressure on my chest or feel like my head is bobbing around, it's just the wind rumble, even with earplugs. Can't really ride along sitting bolt upright it just feels wrong.
Ideas?

I have to say I prefer naked bikes I don't go fast enough to need a fairing or ear plugs

I'm not even going that fast! 50-60mph usually, sometimes up to 70 for short blasts.

it is strange that you are experiencing problems at those sort of speeds it is usually at prolonged high speeds that people suffer from wind and engine noise

It's the vortex that the wind rushing over your screen causing your problem. I have the same problem with my cbf125 head above the windscreen no problems, head below the windscreen ear ache headache ect and that's with two separate helmets.

My wife has a couple of Viragos with (different) screens - they're fine for her, but being a bit taller, my head must stick above into the wind a bit & the noise & buffeting is a pain at any speed!

It's a problem on any faired bike - if you're not quite the right height you can catch the blast off the screen full in the face. I used to ride a Honda ST1100 and found I had to just lean forward a tad to avoid the wind rattling the top of my lid.
Have you got a standard screen or has a previous owner fitted a flip up? With the standard screen I found the wind hit my square in the chest, which caused me problems with a huge draft up inside my lid. I've fitted a flip up screen now which has made things better for me.

I think it might be worth you getting an aftermarket (preferably adjustable) screen to try and change the airflow.
For a start, Skidmarx do a bigger screen:
http://www.skidmarx.co.uk/honda/20555-honda-cb500s-flip-up-tall-screen.html
Sadly they don't have a picture of it - they might be able to send you one. They *might* let you return it if it doesn't solve your problem.... (but probably not).
The fact it is bigger might solve your problem, sadly it is hard to tell.

I dont get an excessive amount of wind noise even with my work helmet which is renowned for being quite a loud one. But i do get the strong gusts inside my helmet that can be irritating at times!...think the wind hits me in the chest also.
Interested in this flip up screen though...
is this one ?
My only worry is that it might direct the wind into my head...has anyone got or tried one?

This is mine - don't know the make, I bought it on this forum. It moves the air blast up a bit which means it isn't hitting me on the chest any more. I have no problems with buffeting though helmet noise isn't noticeably reduced.

Re: Wind noise/buffeting on the CB500S?
The mirrors were originally Kawasaki ER5 I believe, though I have seen other bikes using them. The extended stems are 10mm stainless steel round bar that I got a local engineering shop to turn the metric thread on to. So now I see more than just my elbows. I also use small ebay bar end mirrors as well, 'cos the traffic is out to kill me and I want to see it first !!
Unfortunatly since the photo was taken, I dropped the bike in the laneway here and broke the glass in one of them, so I'll be adapting some Honda mirrors I got from geewhiz as a replacement.

Re: Wind noise/buffeting on the CB500S?
So I realised something that makes me feel a bit silly; a lot of the rumbling was related to my head position. I had a tendency to have my head down a bit on the bike. If I keep my head up more level it's much quieter. My neck has sort of gotten used to it now!
I'm still going to keep an eye out for one of the taller screens if I see one second hand but I don't really want to shell out for a new one.

its not great when you have to keep thinking of your positioning on the bike its not like you are lapping the TTcourse it takes all the pleasure out of riding I sometimes think that fairings and screens are more trouble than they are worth I would sooner have a naked bike

Re: Wind noise/buffeting on the CB500S?
Although the problem is mainly caused by a poor helmet design (my Schuberth Concept was extremely noisy especially on my K100RS at 35 mph and up but my Schuberth C3 is remarkable quiet on every bike I rode), you might get better results with an aftermarket screen.
The Acryfibre screen my 'evil twin' is fitted with is about three inches taller than the stock part and fits well to my needs. Plus, it's made in Britain
As far as I can see it is the one Beresford has got. Perhaps you still could get one of these and I guess you won't be disappointed.

Mine had a Givi tall screen on when I bought it. No problems with buffeting until it hits 3 figures.
