Quick action throttle - for free
I had to remove the tank of my bike recently to slacken the cables so I could replace the throttle tube, this gave me the opportunity to apply a mod I had seen on a Triumph site. I have wrist pain so taking 2 bites at the throttle is uncomfortable and this mod sorts it nicely.
It's very simple, just a piece of plastic from something tubular - in this case part of an old vacuum cleaner.
Make sure it is exactly the same width as the shoulder on the tube (which if its at all old may have a wear groove in it anyway increasing travel even more) and glue it in place with a decent adhesive. Superglue doesn't seem to work on these plastics though.
I found that this reduced the throttle travel to one movement rather than two.

Good idea.
Also, if you don't like the effect, you should be able to remove the added part and return to normal.

Re: Quick action throttle - for free
excellent, id been meaning to get round to trying this after doing a similar mod on my Triumph - how thick is the bit of plastic you added?

About 2.5mm. It's not critical, but the cable has to be able to wrap arount the tube shoulder without fouling on the switch housing.

Re: Quick action throttle - for free
Just made up the piece in question and fitted it up to the throttle..... started the bike and no adverse effects (pinching/sticking throttle) so hopefully will get to try it out in the next few days and report back.
I used some plumbers pipe which I cut to size but suspecting it might be a bit on the soft side so wondering if the cable will start cutting into it..... anyway should be a good enough test to see if its worth finding a more permanent solution.
From what I measured the tube needs to have an ID 32mm or just under, thickness of 2.5mm and 7.5mm width and of course a section removed for where the cable mounts.
I didn't glue it into place, hopefully being precise on the ID of the new piece and snapping over onto the shoulder should grip it and the cables should hold it in place also (....and if I don't like it I can pop it straight out again!)

Quick Action Throttle
Hi,
Lets cut to the chase and get straight to pic....
I've always been very interested in this mod since swapping out the tube on my Street Triple for that of a Speed - it takes some getting used to and found it quite difficult to maintain speed for awhile but the acceleration was superb and for me thats what I love (as opposed to trying to hit that top end).
I had a chat with some people at G2 about making up a tube but never really had time to get the measurements so they could search their stock for something as close as possible - and for those that didn't like the mod at low speed developed a 'tamer' which had a graduation on the throttle grip (http://www.g2ergo.com)
Then I came across the Quick Action Throttle for Free thread in upgrades and became interested in mocking up my own which I did in plastic.
This worked great but I was a tad concerned about the softness of the plastic so showed it to my father in law who is fantastic on the lathe (and also a CB500 owner) who turned up a suitable counterpart in alloy - and it works (...and now looks) great
Couple of more pics...
...and my original plastic one
Dan
(I'll move this thread to the 'Upgrades' section after a little while)
EDIT: just a quick addition on adjustment... there are 3 points of adjustment one on the carbs, one on the inline adjuster on one of the cables itself (I believe this is the same case for OE but I'm running 'Slinkyglide') then lastly on how much the bent tube which meets the housing is screwed in. Mine had little to no slack before modification but then wound it into the housing and gained enough slack to fit the mod without having to take the tank off - phew! then once fitted it did some minor adjustment with the inline adjuster just to make sure that it wasn't sticking. Which is a pretty simple test of trying the steering forward and to each extreme blipping the throttle to make sure it returned back to a normal idle.

Nice job Dan.
Would your FIL be prepared to knock out any more of these, or was it a one off?
In the 2nd to last pic, is your alloy touching the plastic casing when the throttle is fully open?

Nice job Roger more like
Unfortunately not on the copies, he made one for himself and was kind enough to offer another.
That said if anyone wants the plastic one I made up to work from then they are quite welcome to it.
It doesn't touch on any of the pics..... that said the plastic version does have a slightly thicker wall and therefore OD so I'm expecting the alloy version to be better than OE but not quite as extreme as the mockup when I do eventually get to take it out again!

I see.. I thought some of the pix showed the alloy fitted, but you've not got it on the bike yet.

the alloy one is on the bike - I just threw a few pictures of the original plastic one on too just to confuse everyone
I added the original plastic version pics just to show that it can be done with a bit of plumbers PVC-U waste pipe (about 31mm ID, 2.5mm wall, 7mm width then cut out the section for the cable mounts).
