cures for a waggly side stand?

Previous owners weren't as diligent as me when it comes to the lubrication of all points pivotal. Uncaring bastards. Consequently they've left me with a side stand that's got a fair amount of play in it - most up and down, but a bit in every direction tbh. I also note that there are two springs on it - as though someone's tried to address the issue previously.

Is it the stand worn, or the frame side of things? It's only a niggle - but if I can do more to stem the wear than just oiling the damn thing, I sort of feel like I should.

I think they have two spings as standard - one inside the other.

I think the hole that the bolt passes through, enlarges over time.  Is that right?

Mine also has some play in it, which makes the bike lean over more than I would like.  I've considered welding a plate to the bottom of a side stand to make it stand the bike up better.  I would prefer a better solution though, so will follow your progress..

There are a few things to check and it's all down to wear.
The hole in the frame elongates, the hole in the side stand elongates, the shank on the bolt wears away, and most worrying the lug that the springs hook onto on the frame will wear away so check that!!!

All of the side stands on my bikes have loads of left and right movement, I'm sure it could be fixed with a few washers but its never really bothered me.  I remember reading somewhere on here that the spring lug on the frame once snapped through.

I bet it is all three: the hole in the frame, the hole in the stand and the bolt!

The bolt can be replaced, possibly the stand can be replaced but the frame would have to be welded to fix it (*if* it is possible).

The good thing is that if you replace 2 out of 3 (say, bolt and stand) then the wiggle should at least reduce (unless the hole in your frame is really shagged).

Mine is doing something similar and I haven't looked at it yet... I think this is just 'one of those things' that happens (and I haven't got round to fixing yet!).

I have replaced the side stand and springs and it's a lot better, the inner spring had actually rusted through! The bolt is cream crackered though and the spring lug needs attention, plus the wear in the frame. I can't really grumble for a nearly 20 year old bike, it still does me proud

That sounds positive - like I might not have to weld my frame just yet!
