While I am on - one of the things this bike seems to have waylaid is it's bar ends - is ebay the best bet for replacements for a 1998 S model - any suggestions? Thanks

Hi again,
Didn't I say you could be lucky?
If it was me I'd snap this one up as it looks ok, has the ticket box, the tank brackets and best of all the headlight. Have you any idea how much a headlight can cost second hand? Check out cb500s headlights on fleabay.....!
Anyway, good luck with finding the right bike.Very Happy

Many thanks - my thoughts exactly - I am trying to talk him into posting it as he wants to do a home pick up sale in Paris (about 6 hours away!!). At €30 he will have to charge pretty ridiculous postage for it not still to be worth it I reckon.

Good luck, hope you manage to persuade the seller, always good to have a cache of hard to find parts to hand. Can always trade them on later in the club (preferably) if you change your mind.
Cordialement.

He reckons he is going to check postage price tomorrow - as you say I am betting I could probably make on it even if I don't use it - must be somebody on the forum with a ruined fairing!!!

If you didn't buy that fairing, I'd be interested. However he says no sale to UK !
Is Montmorency just north of Paris?

Montmorency is a northern suburb of Paris. Can't remember if it is inside the Periferique which is the Paris equivalent of our M25.

My Daughter lives in St.Germain-en-laye and I've asked her if she could pick it up for me if hovis doesn't take it. It takes down into 4 main bits, so packing shouldn't be too much of a problem

Will let you know when he comes back with a postage price - hopefully today!! Bit of a juggle but I am seeing the bike Tuesday morning and auction ends 1244 French time on Tuesday. So if I need the fairing I will Buy it now (depending on his postage) about an hour before the auction ends on Tuesday morning when I see the bike and the fairing he says he has got (I'm pretty sure its not a proper Honda one but we will see). If you want it -if I haven't bought by the close of the auction go for it - I won't be bidding against you Beresford!!

Hope you got the fairing you need Beresford. In the end didn't buy either the fairing or the bike. After 4.5 hour round trip this morning the bike was OK apart from the abused fairing on it, however needed a jump to start , one indicator worked the other seemed to sort of dim the lights and not work and the headlights switch cut the engine out!! Also lots of backfiring when opened the throttle. Decided to give it a miss and wait for a better one!! Shame otherwise it looked like in fairly decent condition!! He thought I was being picky - maybe!!!

If you have any doubts it is best to walk away. If turning the lights on stalled the engine, could be a box full of frogs. Happy hunting

Well done Hovis, don't buy a 'pig in a poke' or, as that one sounds just a pig. If the seller wouldn't budge on price and knock a lump off, then no, you're not picky, he's a pillock trying to sell a bike in that condition.  Shocked

To be honest he seemed surprised when I checked the lights and then even more when the headlights cut the engine out - if I was selling i would have made sure it was ready to sell before my buyer arrived - or maybe he was just hoping I wouldn't notice!! It all started to get a bit odd when he suggested it might be the fuse for the indicators (?).....The search continues!!

What a twit he must be! You're obviously going to put the lights on, they're compulsory here in France !!

You were looking in France, right?

Yes France - not that I would ride an untried bike home for over 2 hours in the rain after just buying it - but surely if you are selling a bike it at least needs to be road legal - as long as I only turned left (that indicator worked) and didn't turn my lights on I would have been fine!!! At least it looks as though he has now removed his advert - hopefully to sort his electrics out. It makes you ask the question why no MOT equivalent in France for bikes - surely they should have passed a CT(French MOT for cars) to sell just like cars in France - bonkers. There is supposed to be a change coming to have CTs for bikes but last time it was suggested it was not approved!!!

Oh, I've got four bikes, don't want CTs, more expense and regulation thanks. It is a guide if you're buying but as with cars you still need to check the vehicle. Caveat emptor, as they say!

Agreed tricky when you have lots of bikes, and anybody not taking responsibility for themselves and what they buy is mad, but searching for a decent used bike makes me wonder how many heaps of junk there are on french roads with no brakes and a sticky throttle!!!

True, but on a bike it's yourself you'll hurt (by&large of course) in a car it's a different kettle of fish.

The Germans make the rules. The Brits obey the rules. The French ignore the rules. And the Spanish, Italians, and all the eastern European EEC member countries say "What rules?"

Too true Beresford - after 10 years in France always makes me laugh as the french rant about the rules and then in the next breath state that obviously it doesn't apply to me!!!
