Gearbox sprocket, close shave!
Had a close shave with the front sprocket the other day. By chance I decided to fit a one tooth bigger sprocket, when I removed the cover I found the sprocket bolt was unscrewing itself. If the sprocket had come off........at say 60mph........carnage! I seem to remember that when I stripped the bike originally the bolt was well and truly in there. So in my wisdom, to stop it seizing in there I applied a blob of grease to the threads. IDIOT! I've cleaned threads with brake cleaner and used loctite red (max strength). I find it a bit odd that Honda just use a plain washer behind the bolt, bikes I've had in the past had a lock washer or some such. Anyway lucky I decided to up the gearing or I wouldn't have found it.

Have you never had to clean the crud that builds up and around the front sprocket?
I do mine when I clean and re oil the chain. maybe worth putting on your to do list mate.

po
torque nut 5,5 kgm. I consider the perfect alignment of the chain very important, in order to avoid tangential lateral forces.

Yes indeed. The project wasn't finished that long ago so I was surprised (shocked) at how much it had unscrewed. Should be ok now but definitely on my regular check list.

Even without a bolt, I don't think there's much danger of the sprocket and chain coming off as the chain restricts the amount of sideways movement of the sprocket.
However there would certainly be much more wear on the splines, sprocket, and possibly the chain, from the assembly rattling around loose.
