Solved Side stand

Post by James_chivers Thu 15 Sep 2011, 11:23 am

Hello all I am hoping someone can help me. I have not had a CB500 before my current and although I have done a fair bitof work on it, mechanically, there is something bothering me. When the side stand is up it seems to be positioned too close to the chain. Allowing 35mm slack on the chain means it can touch the side stand when the bike is in motion. I do not think this is ideal. Is this normal for this bike or do other bikes have a stopper for the stand? If not does anyone know how it can be adjusted as I can see now way.
Many thanks all. scratch

Solved Re: Side stand

Just had a look at mine, and there's 25mm or so between the chain and the end of the stand.

I don't think there is any way of adjusting this unfortunately, but I'm thinking either the holes in the sidestand/frame mounting plate or the mounting bolt through these holes is worn, allowing the stand a bit too much movement.
Alternatively, there is a "step" behind the stand on the mounting plate, and if this is worn also would allow the stand to come up too far. You could perhaps build this up by welding, or attach some kind of spacer here.

Hope this helps

hey there,

I just ckeck my side stand and i have around 25mm also between stand and chain. strip it apart at check for wear. Thinking about it though your stand must a massive amount of wear in order to rub on the chain...!! is the stand bent..?

What about building up the stop on the exhaust pipe in some fashion to prevent the stand coming up so far?
Whoops, just re-read the question ---- SIDE STAND I`ll have to go to Specsavers!

Could be bent. they are pretty sturdy but they can only take so much.

Thanks for your replies so far. I've just had a look at the stand and nothing is obviously very worn or bent. Strange. Looking at it I think I will drill a small hole in the top of the stand and the force in a screw to act as a stopper. Thanks.
