Hand guards Empty Hand guards

Post by Murray Thu 06 Oct 2011, 8:39 pm

Hi all
Has anyone ever fitted a pair of off road style hand guards to a CB500?
I'm thinking of buying a pair to assist in keeping the worst of the weather off my gloves this winter.
Any ideas?

Hi Murray, I have tried a couple of different types over the last couple of years but never found a set that fit. Sorry to be negative but I would be interested if you found a set that worked . I've fitted a pair of Renthal bars, which are great, but am using the standard levers and twist grip which seemed to be too bulky when trying to fit the hand guards.

Pedro
I have come across the same problem seems the brake master cylinder gets in the way of most of the guards on offer.
I too have renthal bars fitted.
I don't really want to use muffs as I have heard some bad tales but may have to use something as I really suffered last winter with cold fingers whichever gloves I used.
Anyone tried the mitts with two fingers?

I tried my mates lobster gloves and they're really good against the cold, the best thing I bought was heated grips though; once you've fitted them you won't look back! No more pulling over to warm your hands on the engine!

The off road hand guards on my off road bike certainly don't keep my hands warm! I

I bought some Oxford over-mitts to keep my gloves dry. They are a bit clonky - 2 finger and glued on friction pads - but I was surprised how much warmer my hands were. I have heated grips but the overmitts made more difference as the backs of the hands stayed warm. For £10 worth a try.

I have just fitted hand guards on my CB. I bought them from wemoto and they are £9.99. http://www.wemoto.com/parts/picture/HL-263031/. Available in various colours and are a decent size so do a great job with the wind and rain.
Very simple to fit, you will need a stanley knife to trim the plastic slightly but basically the bolts that hold the clutch and brake lever will hold the guards in place.
Bargain and easy to fit!!

Go with hein gericke's trotters. Sheltex outer keep you dry and warm all weather. Got to splash the cash though on a pair of gloves that don't look pretty, in any light.

They are stable with just the bolts holding them at CB speed!. You can always cable tie them as well but I have no issues.

Well I ordered some and up to now they seem to be doing the job of keeping the worst of the rain off my hands.
I now have mitts, heated grips and the hand guards which are keeping my hands toasty warm.
The guards needed a bit if cutting and I have used a cable tie to stop them from folding back in just in case but for the price I'm happy.

Being from the south (which is a little warmer), its no where near cold enough yet for all that protection, so much so that we dont seem to be selling alot of heated grips and muffs yet, but we will eventually . is it cold where u guys are from then..? Laughing

Use the bolts that hold the brake and clutch levers in place to go through the main holes, you may need to make these slightly bigger. Then use a stanley knife to trim the plastic to fit your cables. If it is a bit loose then use a cable tie through the holes. It's not an exact art as they are not specifically designed to fit a particular bike but I have used them on a couple of CB's to good effect.

Thanks, so did u end up loosing the nuts from those bolts under the calipers? Or did u need a bigger bolt?

i just whacked them on tonight - i used the main top hole of the guard with the bolt of the lever and sanded the bottom on away on the brake lever side for clearance. Clutch side was simpler... . A cable tie either side and they seem very secure. Another quick and satisfying job, and i think they look suitably dated and in character with the rest of the bike. Nice.

hi, i have the same gaurds as digger, and i made some small alloy brackets that hold the gaurds out, these bolt onto to the handle bar ends, with a pair of oxford heated grrips, the wrap around style seems to keep me hands warm,
