    I have stripped both wheels off my bike to re-paint them in preparation for new tyres and the dreaded MOT.

    As various people have pointed out in past posts there was quite a lot of white crumbly oxidation between the disc and wheel casting, particularly on the back wheel.
    The new tyres come tomorrow ( Michelin Pilot Street Radials - £115 the pair fitted ) and I am wondering whether I can put copper grease on the wheel / disc mating face to prevent future corrosion, or is this not clever as the disc does get hot.

    What do you guys think ?

    I may be completely wrong but that's why copper grease is used instead of grease around breaking components like the bolts because it's resistant to the heat.

    Also, in my opinion applying to the mating surface should be fine. just don't overdo it Very Happy

    I wouldn't. I would worry that it would fling out onto the disc.

    granted there's a rotational force which is why I said don't over do it but it should be no biggie..... it gets put on the back of the pads etc so the disc will be fine as long as you don't get it on the usable area.

    So long as it's put on sparingly & any excess that squeezes out on assembly is cleaned up it shouldn't be a problem.

    Not sure I'd bother though since you're repainting the wheels too.

    There was no paint on the mating surface, I wonder if Honda had some reason for that ? Paint can cook in the heat, brake disc might not run true on a painted surface ?

    No paint o the mating surface is to allow a god heat path  remember the brakes turn the bikes momentum into Heat  that needs to escape from the disk some will go into the air stream some goes via the wheel giving a larger thermal mass and bigger area to radiate heat

    I had my wheels coated and forgot to mask up the rear mating surface (as you can see in the pic) ....not ideal as davebike says but then I've had no problems with heat and running true. The front however I made sure were perfectly smooth with some high grade wet and dry and then cutting paste.

    Just got my wheels back from tyre fitting - looking sexy !!!
    The fitter said I should have brought them in with the discs fitted for correct balancing. I'm not too worried, I dont think a disc would cause balancing problems ?

    Hurst tyres, Sydenham depot.
    I could have got them on line for a few pounds cheaper, but the final price (£117) included fitting with new valves and balancing so it was a no-brainer to get them there.

    Using some kind of grease on the mating surface is a good idea. Instead of using copper grease I've switched to ceramic grease. Why? Between steel and aluminium copper is a third metal which may cause more electrolytihical reactions.
    Only downside: ceramic grease is rather expensive.

    I'm orienting on new tyres, so I'm curious to your experience with the Michelin tyres.
