Hi, new rider and new cb owner

Hi all, just registered on here as picking up a cb500 next saturday. It's an ex riding school bike with 46k on the clock, it's a bit tatty but the engine sounds very good and felt really smooth when it out.

I will be wanting to tart the bike up a bit, part of which will be a stainless steel exhaust to replace the cruddy original. I also want to clean the engine up by getting rid of the surface / paint corrosion and have read all sorts of advice but what i need is something that is relatively easy to use but is still effective as i'm a bit of a numpty at such things. Any ideas?

Anyway, looking forward to getting the bike and getting out on the road. I had an old tenere before and i never got on with it, it was my first big bike and damaged my confidence so definitely looking forward to the cb500

I always used to fancy a tenere but never got round to trying one, what didnt you like,was it the height?

The height was great for me, I'm 6'6", but i can see how it would be a problem for shorter riders. It was the way the power was delivered to the wheels - all or nothing. Great on open road but just too ready to rip your head off in traffic. Don't get me wrong the tenere is a top bike but not a beginners bike, well not this beginner anyway

I know the tenere isn't as powerful / quick as the cb but i think the single cylinder engine was the culprit for me.

Just twenty minutes on the cb and i fell in love with it, sooooo smooth. Canna wait to pick it up next saturday.

I am in the same position as you - tidying up a tatty but sound bike.

Silver smooth hammerite (smoothrite) has worked well on my engine so far - I applied it with an airbrush but you could either brush it on or use a rattle can...

I have used this on other engines - air and water cooled and it stays put pretty well.
