I adjusted the idle and balanced the carbs today (having checked the valve clearances on Monday) and the engine is a lot smoother despite only being 3cm HG out. I found that I did not have to take the fuel tank off to do this. I know some people say they can balance the carbs with the fuel in the bowl but I was able to keep the fuel tank connected but turn it through 90 degrees so that it was riding side saddle. It was easy!

Re: carb balance tip
That does sound eminently possible, espeically if you obtained a longer fuel hose than the standard one.
One word of warning, especially to those with shiney/well looked after/nice bikes (unlike mine!) - fuel tanks have a nasty habit of denting easily and the bottom is often not very flat, so while it is perched on top of your bike there is a certain chance of knocking it off and causing an annoying dent/leak....
For those of you who aren't as incompetant as me, seems like a good idea :)
