Re: Coil upgrade
Can someone quickly tell me what these coils do and why it works much better with coils from CBR bikes ?

Re: Coil upgrade
I found that it cuts out weak points in the ignition system, such as the plug caps and HT leads. These have been the cause of many woes on these bikes.
They are a lighter and a neater set up, oh, and they give a stronger more reliable spark at the plug. Especially at higher revs where the originals struggle as they age. (Don't we all).

Re: Coil upgrade
small update but the upgrade's fixed my starting issues as well! it used to take three presses of the starter to get it started sometimes wuth a bit of throttle applied as well but now it doesnt even take a whole press and it fires up straight away. im im guessin it is one of the old parts that git replaced that was o its last legs and why the starter brushes were ground to fuck when i iirst got the bike so cheers for that andy!

Re: Coil upgrade
fitted stick coils today, though just to try them out so nothing is permanently connected at the moment, and bike fired up straight away The mounts on the connector side of the coils are broken and rusted and the connectors themselves are covered in corrosion so no wonder I have had starting issues, especially on the right side. I am just waiting for a new set of crimping pliers to arrive as mine are meant for insulated connectors.

it is probably one of the easiest and most beneficial mods you can make Chris.

Does anyone have any idea of a particular cap to make airtight at the top due to the difference in diameter between coil and hole?

I had a pair made in a local shop that sells all things rubber. I think they were 3mm thick and made with this kind of tool https://toolguyd.com/hollow-punch-set-for-rubber-washers-gaskets/
I don't remember if I paid 1 eur for a piece or for the pair. Anyway money well spent and a happy customer.
One DIY option might be to wrap several rounds of vulcanising silicone tape to the coils on suitable location to make them thicker. Obviously with this approach the plug will not be at the very top of the hole. Regular tape with glue (like electrical tape) typically cannot tolerate high temperatures, so that might not work.

Re: Coil upgrade
Coils have arrived. Thank you Andy. I haven't examined the existing set-up yet to see what I need to do, but can you tell me whether the connectors you provide have to be hard wired to the existing loom, or whether I must make up short links that plug into connectors on the existing loom as shown by Haybunch. I'd prefer not to have to modify the standard wiring if at all possible.

Re: Coil upgrade
You can wire them up to the existing loom, it shouldn't be a problem. I wire them with the common wire to the left as you look down on the new coils in the cylinder head. You may need to unravel some of the tape to get enough play in the wire but otherwise it's pretty straightforward Mike.

Re: Coil upgrade
I think it is also interesting to cover the new wiring with thermo shrink tube. Also, when put a new male terminal, always with external plastic insulator cover on this new. Looking for, there are those that even hug on the already existing female terminal of origin. On sale in electronic parts stores, for example.

Re: Coil upgrade
Success. Finally got everything back together and link leads made (had to wait for an order of spade connectors from ebay). I'd also taken the radiator and fan off to deal with corrosion. So the sticks are in and SHE RUNS !

Re: Coil upgrade
Hi guys, I'm quite eager to try the change to stick coils, as I would buy them second hand from what model of bike is best? Also are there suitably cheap new ones available?
Thanks, Dave.
Thanks, Dave.
