Side Stand Light? Drain Hoses on Link Pipe?- CB500 1995
Hi Guys.
Posted on here yesterday with idle/misfire issues and I'm trying my best to fault find.
I've had a suggestion that the carbs need a service but just want to ask a couple of questions.
I replaced the end can and link pipe and accidentally pulled on all of the hoses that mount through it, could any of these effect the fuelling or air flow into the engine or cause air to leak in creating the issues above?
I also noticed that since I fitted the exhaust my side stand light comes on when it idles really rough sometimes but then as revs build it turns back off? Is the light used to signify anything other than the side stand?
Have I possibly pulled on something?
It's so strange as the idle can be fine for 10-15secs then goes rough and can come back to normal again.....?

Could this all be related to some dodgy/mucky safety switches as I find my kill switch is very sensitive too?

When the side stand switch activates and you're moving, it will kill the engine (because it thinks you're riding with the stand down). Perhaps it's not properly seating on the new end can, and causing the issue.

It seems the side stand just rests against the frame and the switch is the older rotating style one which may have got some crud inside it?
Could be a case that at certain revs this is shorting out making the bike think the stand is down then it's fine again after?
Might explain why it comes on when I'm riding but doesn't cut the engine out?
Will report back on my findings after some fettling tonight.

This could certainly be the problem. Have a look at the wiring diagram - you can see the side stand switch and how it connects up. I can't quite remember but it might be worth unplugging it and seeing what happens...
Best of luck.

Quick update on my recent gremlins.
After a quick check in the Haynes at the electrical diagram and a side stand kill switch bypass later the bike seems to be running fine.
I'm putting it down to a bad live wire which has rubbed through to my side stand light on the clocks making it illuminate without the stand being down, I think the associated wire links either into the ignition switch or reg/rec where it's next to it in the wiring loom.
Should be fine for a couple of days till I can have a look at the weekend and find the bad wire

Just make sure to double check that you have put the stand up!

Another update, the stand bypass wire hasn't fixed the misfire/bad earth issue but still think its this part of the loom that causing the problems.

What an arse. It's always annoying when this stuff 'comes back' after you think it's gone away.
I reckon if you take all the plastics off the bike and then run it at idle while you go around and wiggle various parts of the loom and connectors you might have a chance of finding it.
