Wheel and Tyre sizes

I know this has been covered quite a bit, but can it be summarised for me please?

I do like the look of wider tyres and I see that you can fit a little wider on the same rim.
I liked the look of it on my Hornet 600.

Then I see that you can fit a wider rim (I think I read it was an old cbr wheel (not entirely sure))

So, am I right in thinking that wider rims equals more weight, so not so good?

What are the handling pros and cons of a wider tyre on our CB5s?

Why do it? I feel like it would give better grip in corners, but I don't really know.
I also read that it makes them less nimble.

I have a lot of little lanes around me and like the nimbleness of it at the moment.

Or is it all about what tyre you have / want and get the wheel that fits that?

Right so here we go then....

Yes you can fit a wider rim and yes the cbr600f2 also uses a 130 rear tyre so changing the wheel to that is possible but it's a massive pain in the arse as you need custom spacers made up as the hub width is different and IIRC a custom rear caliper bracket welding onto the swingarm. This is to do with the disc alightment for the caliper spacing and the chain alignment as different sprocket carriers have different widths.

Fun fact. The F2 and the F3 hubs are the same distentions but not the rim width so you can fit a 160 rear tyre as stock on the F3 which swiftly moves us on.

A wider rear tyre(should you change the rim) like what @andyc has with the cbf500 rear wheel. Will cause chain clearance issues on the tyre so typically you'll need an offset front sprocket to counteract this.

As for fitting a 140 rear to a 130 standard you'll be fine but it's also pretty pointless unless you're reaching the edge of the tyre regularly like me Wink

As for your final question, I run a 110/70/17 and a 140/70/17 S20 evo tyres. I somewhat "bimble"(race) about on single lane back roads where my runoff areas are a stone wall, river, reservoir, or some stone barn that's over 400 years old. I also commute on motorways and I love them they've got really long life but I really love the way they tip into corners due to their aggressive profile so they don't square off so quickly unlike bt45's. I personally went through 1mm of tread on a bt45 in less than 300 miles and I wasn't giving it the stick that I usually do either.

Fun fact: S20 evo's are cheaper per pair than bt45's and are a much better tyre.

Front rim is 2.5 and rear is 3.5
if you look at the charts for tyres you will see that 110/70-17 is not recommended for 2.5 rims, it will br too narrow. I believe 110/80-17 is the only way so the tyre works as intended.
the rear is trickier, recommend tyre size by honda is 130/80-17 but the rim is 3.5. In the charts you see that 3.5 is the widest rim for 130/80-17 but the best size would be 140/80-17. There is clearance to fit this tyre on the cb500 but the rear will be a bit taller than standard. I dont know about the handling difference having a heavier and taller tyre on the rear.
i have been searching for info about cb500 tires and im not sure about what tyre (pilot activ vs bt45 vs mc50) and what size to fit.
would be great to fit some radial tires but front is too narrow, im afraid about grip loss at great lean angles.
Anyone tried mitas/sava mc50?

Just my in put I've been running

120/70-17 front and 140/70-17 rear

I've had this size on the bike since I've got and it's given me no issue what so ever I've also been running the pilot street tyres I've used the bike everyday commuting to and from work and week end rides and in that time I've had no issue what so ever with them or the size choice

fiHey james, you convinced me. I'm new to the forum and now realize you must have a lot more knowledge than me regarding the cb500. I took a look on tires vs rims and posted what manufacturers said about sizes. If you say that even with 2.5 (and not 2.75/3.5) front we are better using 110/70 I believe, I assume you can understand the possible problems with that. Rear also.
I'm gonna usa those tires(s20 evo) on those sizes next time, thanks for the input. Radials would be great on cb500.

I have some knowledge and understanding, I learnt everything from this forum, remember a lot of it is personal preference especially with tyres.

yesterday i put s20 evo front and rear (110/70-17 and 14/70-17)
the front is real round, i won´t use the entire tyre even at full lean, but they inspire great confidence.
also put some ikon shocks and waiting to install wilbers fork springs with 10W oil, it will be interesting.

James, what tyre preassures are you using with s20 evo? mine is 2,4 bar front and 2,8 bar rear.
i really would like your opinion about s20 evo pressures

2 bar front and 2.2 rear maybe 2.4.

They make the bike drop into corners like a dream.

What about Metzler Sporteck Klassiks? Anyone used them? They are in the recommended sizes and ,at least on my French site, they get 5stars customer rating.

I just fitted the S20 Evo two days ago and they are APOCALYPSE especially compared to my previous (Michellin Pilot Activ). I definitely suggest fitting those, the bike handles amazingly now and you will find entering - exiting corners quite smooth.

What was wrong with the pilot active ones? I am about to order a set of these to my wifes CB5...

I currently have a Pilot Activ on the back and I put 10,000km on it already. It's a decent tyre but keep in mind it's older technology compared to what's made now. It's really good on the dry but it doesn't inspire any confidence on the wet.
I just felt the rear wanting to go sideways a few times whilst my front Metzeler Roadtec 01 performed superbly.

On a positive not, it should offer good mileage, I reckon I can put at least another 5k on mine. It also doesn't seem to square off as much as my previous BT45.

Sorry for the late response. If you are planning on getting a divorce go ahead with michellin (kidding). Zeke is right, plus Bridgestone offers dual rubber in it's tires. Evos might get you less mileage but the difference in handling and confidence is more than worth the sacrifice. I am touring with them right now and not even once I felt insecure entering sharp corners in high speed.
