Engine side case paint?
Hi
Side cases looking pretty rough on my engine. Any recommendations for good paint that will match stock finish?
Really not familiar with model differences over the years. Motor finish is silver and bike 1998 vintage CB500S. Is that enough info?
Appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Re: Engine side case paint?
The cases on the stator side of my 98 500s are also tatty I think there are three good options
1 put up with it(cheapest one)
2 paint it whilst attached to the machine
3 acquire a second hand casting have it bead blasted and either paint it yourself with a rattler and lacquer it after , or buy both casts and have them stove enamel painted that should make it quite resistant to the elements .rattle can won’t match the existing colour so if that bothers you then you will have to paint both sides. Good luck.

Re: Engine side case paint?
AFAIK then no one has really discovered what the 'paint code' (or similar identifier) is for the engine paint on the CB500, so getting a match may be a matter of trial and error.
If it's really manky then I would suggest that almost any silver engine paint (e.g. the one from Halfords) will make it look better, even if the colour isn't quite right.
Also, if your paint has got to the point of flaking off then the remaining paint probably isn't the same colour as it 'should be', so even being able to buy the 'correct' might be of limited use.
I've quite happily managed to spray the side cases while the engine is attached to the bike - you just need to do the masking well (lots of tape and also newspaper/old sheets to stop overspray, not to mention a fair bit of time and a nice day) and have given them a mild sanding and a good clean first.
You'll then end up with some side cases that look nice but the rest of the engine will be less good - this isn't too bad but it might annoy some people. If you want to go any further it's probably best to think about taking the engine out of the frame...

Yes, if you have any success then show us a nice picture
In my experience it is a lot of work polishing engine cases - I suspect it is made easier if you take them off the bike and do it with some kind of buffing/polishing machine, but then you will have to buy new gaskets, so it's up to you.
Buffed/polished cases can look really good, so don't let me put you off, it's just best to appreciate that it might well be a good deal of work before you start!
