CB500S mirrors Empty CB500S mirrors

Post by BC3841 Sun 08 Jan 2012, 4:08 pm

I am a 70 year old just returning to biking and have just bought a CB500S. On the way back on the motorway, I had a hairy experience when overtaking, as I couldn't see anything in the mirrors except for my shoulders! Is there any cheap cure for this, such as mirror extenders, etc.? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there, this is a real problem on a bike, the only way to be absolutley certain there is nothing coming up the side of you is, the life saver look.

I am going to try some of thos fish eye mirrors on mine. Also thought about an extra mirror mounted somewhre on fairnig or bars.

But I know exactly what you mean I have had some close ones.

My bike came to me with some tatty old 80's VFR 750 mirrors on it. The rectangularish shape gives a bit more view.

I'm sure I've seen some rectangular ones on metal stems much like the original round ones but my google-fu is weak today.

Even with the extra vision they're no replacement to lifesavers Wink

Hi I just looked and see that the mirrors look handlebar mounted,ie on the clutch and brake lever mounts. I can say for certain that the 10mm mirror risers/extenders work , I had them on my cb and the difference was amazing, they rise about half an inch and extend a couple of inches and are simple to fit, just one bolt each side. Pity I didnt see this earlier I just sold mine on ebay but there are plenty on there, priced about the 12 to 16 quid or so mark if i recall. well worth it.

CB500S mirrors Empty CB500 mirrors.

Thanks very much davethewory, that’s good news, as I’ve just
bought a pair from Ebay. They arrived from Hong Kong this morning (took 5 days)
and I’ve been chasing around all morning getting them attached. So far, I’ve
had to pack the left one with washers, as the extender was fouling the
handlebar choke lever.

I attached both extenders, then found I couldn’t adjust the
mirrors, as both mirror adjusting locknuts were too tight. So I sprayed WD40 on
the exposed threaded part of the stems and in between the nuts, which caused
the paint to peel off the stems and I still couldn’t free them! (Murphy’s Law!)

So I took them to the local shop, where they freed them by
sticking them in a vice and heaving on the locknuts with a spanner, advising me
that the left hand mirror had a Yamaha (left hand) thread.

They are now ready for the grand trial and your
experience of them bodes well. I shall be posting again with further, hopefully
happy, news.

I have today
attached the mirror extenders bought from ebay and they do make an
appreciable difference. They are for 10mm mirrors and they extend the originals
by 1.38”(35mm) vertically and by 2.36”(60mm) horizontally.

They are available from: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chrome-Riser-Mirrors-Extender-Adapter-Honda-Suzuki-Kawasaki-KTM-Aprilia-10MM-/320786511489?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ab05db681

and they took 5 days to arrive from Hong Kong.
