Re: My Track bike project
A few pictures just to update the project thread.
The engine is now ready to take to the dyno as I've got the jetting as close as I can with the AFR meter.
It's been set on the rich side to be safe.
I'm in the proccess of brazing the bottom of the fuel tank in place now. Pictures of the finished article will follow (eventually)
I have just received delivery of a billet clutch basket, I will eventually get around to machining the clutch backplate to fit it.
And a few more pictures of the bike.
Just in case I forgot what the blue tank was for they wrote it on it
I do actually feel as though I'm making some decent progress with it now, it's a pity that all the dyno and powder coating places have had to close.

Of course as this is a modern custom built bike, you'll have to sport a man bun when you ride it

Re: My Track bike project
It's turning into a thing of beauty Andy. As we can't do much riding at the moment I would park it in the living room so I could look at it while the wife watches her crap on the telly.

Hope you (and everyone) are keeping well.
Bike is looking great now.
Please post again when you finish the tank and get to a dyno!

Re: My Track bike project
Those are tasty looking rods. What is your expected rev ceiling with the Wossner pistons ?

Re: My Track bike project
I'm working on a reliability principle, not that these engines have any unreliability issues you understand. However as I intend to double the power output that will easily highlight any potential weaknesses. After putting so much time and effort into the engine, I'm not going to give it an opportunity to defeat me because I overlooked something.
Maybe I'm over cautious but I used to work with Lamborghini engines and have seen many with thrown rods, when you pay that much you would expect forged rods wouldn't you.
I expect to be running a 12k redline, but it depends where the power starts to drop off really.

Re: My Track bike project
Will the block need to be strengthened at all for 12K. The rods , pistons, and I assume also the crank should be fine at that. I used to build Imp racing engines and it was the block which was the weak link. Though we only took them to 10,200 (usually!) as they were only 8 valves.

Re: My Track bike project
There's nothing really that we can do to the block as it's an integral part of the crankcase. Hopefully that should be up to the job.

Re: My Track bike project
Any chance of a cheeky little update??
I'm currently lapping valves (standard) in up at the table

Re: My Track bike project
OK time for a long overdue update.
I decided not to bother about doing my engine tuning in stages and go all out on my engine.
so as you see I went for 76mm pistons, forged conrods as well as a billet clutch basket. Another set of crankcases went for vapour blasting and are presently being bored out to suit the new pistons.
I have been distracted by Chris arriving to collect a wider rear wheel to fit to his cb500 as a project.
After seeing my track bike he wanted an engine building for a track bike with more power. As I had a pair of new 73mm forged pistons available I built an engine with a head and cams that Chris had bought. I also did a carb conversion to 38mm fireblade carbs.
The jetting was a best guess but we put it on the dyno. I'll have to work out how to post that picture up, but the results were great!
The jetting was a bit lean for my liking though giving a healthy 62 hp at the back wheel. Now this was at 10k rpm and was only bought to a stop by the rev limiter built into the standard CDI.
We changed it for my programmable CDI, keeping the ignition curve as standard and just shifted the rev limit to 12k rpm did the trick.
Although we didn't get it back on the dyno to get figures the power was tailing off just after 11k rpm. Chris was out on it at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago at the Bemsee test day, and it certainly was no slouch.
This was just as much down to Chris's ability as the bike I'm sure, but there were many eyebrows raised at this CB500 certainly holding it own amongst all but the class leaders in the mini twins department, definitely punching above it weight .
By the end of the day Chris wanted an all out engine like mine to go out racing in the power to weight classes. This is in the process of being built at the moment. The cost is not for the faint hearted but neither is racing I guess.
Once the engine is finished I'll update with the results of our labour

Re: My Track bike project
I worked out how to post it, this actually shows 61 but you can see it wanted to go more.
It is a serious increase in the torque too.
as a comparable this was a relatively standard engine (my workbike)

Re: My Track bike project
Brilliant. Very impressive. Glad i asked.
Nice straight line power 'curve' and good gains!
I would love to have some ball park figure for these kind of upgrades - but i already know that 'if you have to ask you probably can't afford it' thing is true!!
Thanks for the update anyway. Appreciate it
