helmet visor wipers
Throughout my motorcycling days over the past years, I thought biking in the rain would be far safer if helmet visors had wipers,
like car windscreen wipers. Well folks, they're here at last!
A cheaper version is available on eBay for £38.53 at:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-HELMET-VISOR-Windshield-WINDSCREEN-WIPER-FOR-HARLEY-DAVIDSON-KAWASAKI-/111171574119?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Helmets&hash=item19e2579967
Has anyone ever tried them?!

The speed I go, those suction cups would never hold!

Re: helmet visor wipers
Looks like it’s designed for a max speed of 100kmh
(scroll down the eBay ad. for spec. in Chinglish) which
equates to 62mph, so should be OK for town use.
For higher speeds I would probably try experimenting with it
e.g. by using a belt looped twice around the battery
compartment and over my head, inside the helmet.
(‘Twice’ to help retain it, in case it does come off anyway.)
This may make me look more of a prat but may actually work!

Re: helmet visor wipers
To me, this gives a whole new meaning to the term propellerhead...
May I suggest using eg. RainX instead.

Re: helmet visor wipers
RainX is good on your car windscreen.
I believe they suggest that you don't use it on clear plastics (like motorcycle visors).
You want Nikwax Visor Proof:
http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=248
Does (essentially) the same thing.
I suspect that almost any silicone polish (Pledge?, Mr Muscle?) would probably have the right effect, sadly I don't know which ones are safe to use on your visor

I'm perfectly happy using the bottle of RainX on my shelf. It works just fine with visors. Try reading the reviews on Halford - others have similar experiences.eternally_troubled wrote:RainX is good on your car windscreen.

But Turtle Extreme Glasspolish is just plain rubbish.

Clearly not a contraption designed for people with big noses. Imagine Gerard Depardieu wearing one...

Thats unlikely anyway, he wouldn't fit in a racing car now - too many pies

Re: helmet visor wipers
Makes interesting reading, all the alternatives. I think the safest is the one on eBay,
which is closest to a car's windscreen wipers, albeit in need of a few changes, notably
the attachment should be made firmer, so it stays on at up to 100mph or so at least.
I'm sure I saw a mechanic at a F1 race track using one a few years ago on TV. I think
it was a Renault mechanic if I remember rightly.

Re: helmet visor wipers
So do I - cheap and effective!!
I think the helmet wiper one wouldn't work very well, because it pivots, instead of moving laterally across the visor.

Re: helmet visor wipers
To each his own. I must say I would prefer the system that
comes closest to a car's wipers, which has stood the test of
time over the last 100 years or so. If a lateral wipe is
preferred to 'pivoting' wipers, I think it would be possible to
arrange 2 pulleys, one on either side of the visor, rather than
the top mounted ones on eBay. The wiper blade/s could be attached to a band - similar to a tank track - passing over
the pulleys. Attaching the contraption to the sides of the
helmet instead of the top wouldn't be as conspicuous as
overhead mounting. There could be 2 miniature motors, easily switchable while riding, one on either side, one for driving
the wipers and
the other for the washer pump! At least I'd have more control
over the bike, not having to release the handlebar as often as when using the 'glove wiper', with all the bumps and
potholes
around, especially in heavy rain, when you can't judge the
depthof the potholes!

Re: helmet visor wipers
NEWSFLASH!! The perfect solution may be near: F1 McLaren is designing a sports car windscreen that uses a system adapted from fighter jets to keep a driver’s vision clear in bad weather without the need for wiper blades. The system uses ultrasonic vibrations to shake off rain, insects, mud and other objects on the screen.
Oscillators are placed along the topand bottom of the windscreen, which, when turned on, create waves of ultrasonic vibrations that push water off the glass. According to the Daily Mail, they will only cost £10 each to mass produce. Here’s hoping motorcycle visors will be using them in the near future!

I'm not sure as I just copied and pasted your post into a reply. Possibly something to do with your settings for choice of font.BC3841 wrote:Thanks very much Beresford. What was I doing wrong?!
