Re: rear brake pad plate
Hello and welcome. My first point of call for little parts like that is my local honda dealer. It will be overpriced but probably less than £5. They can always order the parts sharpish if they are not on the shelf. Lings and david silver for delivered parts.

Re: rear brake pad plate
Do you mean number 5 from here:
http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_motorcycle_parts_selection_pfk.php?block_01=13MY5WEA&block_02=F__1102&block_03=1612&block_04=xx&block_05=hmc
or here:
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500-1997-v-england_model1579/partslist/F__1102.html#results
Assuming you are talking about number 5 then neither place seems to have any stock and I can't see anything on David Silver's website either.
It is still worth asking a dealer (the Honda part number is 43108MAK003) - it might also be worth asking an independent garage, my local independent motorcycle place can order things from Honda easily.
I can see why you are having problems finding it!
So on ebay - as you can see there are a few, not *too* expensive but you do have to buy a whole caliper and cross your fingers that it has the correct part inside!
The other option is to buy/find some thin spring steel and attempt to bend one yourself - I suspect that the dimensions are not super critical, just that it springs in the right way. All that having been said it would be a lot easier to make one if you had one to copy, so it still might be worth buying a caliper off ebay.
On a slightly different note - what happens if you just leave it out? I think you'll just get a clacking sound every time you use the rear break and the caliper will wear in a strange way - not good but I doubt it is immediately terminal either...

It is listed as "Special ordered upon request" on David Silver's website with 5-7 days delivery time.

True. If they can actually order it and Honda actually have it I agree this would be a good idea and probably easiest all round; I fear that it won't be available, as per the other two sources.

Re: rear brake pad plate
its not actually number 5 its the bit under the left hand bit of the caliper bracket without a number. its called a pad plate and slots in the end of the caliper and the pad ends sit in it, got an awful feeling i am not going to be able to get one, hawkwind

Re: rear brake pad plate
I think that little plate takes the load onto the caliper from the disc when the pads are gripping. If it isn't there then eventually the steel pad back plate will wear a gouge into the alloy of the caliper - and be noisy every time the brake is applied.
However if you can get some stainless ( spring ideally ) steel sheet of a suitable thickness, a Dremel (or similar rotary tool) would be able to shape it quite easily.
Material like that probably can't be bought in a shop so keep your eyes open for scrap stuff.

Oh, so that is what "Special ordered upon request" actually meant.

Ah! Yes! I see. Other people have had this problem before - there is nowhere (that we have found) where you can buy that part separately from the caliper as a whole, I think Beresford's idea is probably the best one going (other than buying a whole caliper just to steal a little bit).

Re: rear brake pad plate
thanks for all the answers everyone. what i can gather it is made from annealed spring steel and is probably not able to be worked with by "biker in shed". i have messaged a couple of people on ebay selling the whole caliper if they include the part but no replies. this is pissing me off as my 500 is my winter bike and i need it sorting. shes a rat but she is one hell of a rat and so much fun. i suppose with the "stupid" design of the back end no other brake will fit her? thanks again, jp

Re: rear brake pad plate
I think that it should be possible to work the part if you can get a piece of spring steel. Heat it to glowing and let it cool normally, then it should be bendable and shapeable. When you have made it to suit, heat to glowing again and immediately quench in some old oil. That should get the springyness back.

Re: rear brake pad plate
I seem to remember a thread on here a while ago, confirming that there is another bike, which shared the same calliper. IIRIC, there were more of 'that' calliper available at the time.
A search might bring it up.

Re: rear brake pad plate
well after much investigation i found a metal company in rotherham that sells spring steel. i went over there and spoke to a very nice chap who let me have a small piece for nothing ( i did force him to take a fiver ). he wasnt confident that i could make the part in my garage but on the 5th attempt i had the thing made and it works great, so up yours honda! but today after noticing a clicking sound i found my front disc has a crack in it, doh! jp

Any photos of your efforts ?
If you need to replace the front caliper, Nissin is just as good as the Brembo and has the great advantage that overhaul kits are a lot cheaper. It will work with either master cylinder but I think they use different hydraulic banjo bolts.
