Water pump seal replacement Empty Water pump seal replacement

    Hi people,

I've finally traced the source of a leak , I think the only leak on the machine, so that's great.

I had a garage look it over, apparently between the water pump and the engine is a seal or a gasket. I don't even know what a gasket is, so that's bloody great.

*gasket* - a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression

ok well... so I know that now. What is the part I'm looking for? Is it sold alone? Do you know where I mean, between the engine and the pump?

    99% sure it's just a standard o-ring - just checked Jonny's link and it's spot on

Hi there, I've started this job - to get at the O-ring seals and replace them.

First thing in the Haines manual is, drain the coolant. That requires removing the fuel tank.

All of a sudden the job takes on monstrous proportions! I should've seen it coming.

So, is it possible to switch out these seals in any way that doesn't involve fuel tank removal? I thought it might be a simpler job than this.

    Thanks

I don't have my Haynes handy but yeah definitely a good idea to read through the entire procedure before embarking on this, could be a few other 'remove this, remove that' for water pump seal replacement (engine oil?)

Fortunately tank removal is relatively easy and not as messy like you might imagine. It will need to be removed to get to the coolant filler cap which is under it. Coolant will need to be drained before you get to the water pump then refilled using the cap under the tank once you've put the new seal in.

First bike I ever owned had a leaking water pump seal.. I remember it seeming like such a daunting job at the time, so many things had to be done to get to it and I didn't understand why! However once you've done these things a few times and seen the inner workings it all seems simple and makes much more sense...

Can anyone advice on a coolant brand? I see I need 50% "corrosion inhibited ethylene glycol antifreeze" per the manual, 50% distilled water. Any brand will do or...?

When draining the current coolant, I seem to have sullied it with a little oil from the frame. Thought I might as well replace.

    Thanks

50% "corrosion inhibited ethylene glycol antifreeze"

    That's 'normal' antifreeze then Smile

For the record I used the blue stuff from Halfords without a problem.
