Solved How to remove the handlebar locking mechanism

Post by stormbringer Sun 31 Mar 2013, 7:27 pm

Bought me a CB500 with a broken handlebar locking mechanism.

I've removed the headlight and the instrument housing to get at the ignition/locking mechanism. But to no avail. It appears that the lock is mounted using some sort of 'round' nuts.

How do I remove it for overhaul?

IIRC the bolts that hold the lock on are torx security heads with a post in the middle. A security bit set should have the bit you require.

All the ignition locks that I have worked with have been the security type that the head shears off on assembly. This leaves no head to grip, just a smooth dome surface and they have to be drilled out. It's not really viable attempting this with the top yoke still on the bike. The only plus is that it is a fairly soft steel and easy to drill out.

I had to do this on mine after I over tightened the top yoke fork clamp and it snapped Embarassed
As the others say you have to drill off the security bolt head and once free you can unscrew the shank of the bolt when the lock is removed. Just make sure you use a centre punch to get a good centre on the bolt head! It's not a bad job, as mentioned the bolts are fairly soft.

Yup - googled around a bit and learnt about those security bolts. Makes perfect sense. Undoable outside in the middle of the night - doable in the workshop with good lighting and the heater on Smile

OK. So there was no easy solution. I've been considering superglue and a nut...
Luckily, my neighbor has a drill press.

    Solved The 'official' method?

Post by stormbringer Thu 04 Apr 2013, 7:33 pm

The Haynes manual was in the mail today.

I looked up their proposal, and it was to drift the bolts round using a punch or chisel. Oh well - easily tried once i get the yoke off of the bike. If it doesn't work, there's a drill press to fall back on.

Play safe and use the drill method, one slip and you will damage the ignition lock which will set you back. the lock housing is only diecast and pretty weak.

Hehe. Apparently it pays off to be patient.

I've done 6000 miles since the last post in this thread, and today something funny happened:
The steering lock gave in, and finally engaged. Using the key. On purpose.
This renders the need for exchanging the lock assembly nonexisting.

This saved me 300£ or so. Wonderful!
