Really I need to rebuild mine from the frame upwards, with getting the wheels, engine, and other parts resprayed, the frame and swingarm powercoated but at the moment been my only transport isn't not a feasible route. So currently maintaining the condition isn't particularly important just as long as I keep the brakes and chain maintained ok. Need to get the f2n rear wheel fitted once I'm back home which may need some machining done to make fit properly

cb750 1992 - 1999. I'm thinking the disc side needs to be skimmed down as would the inner bearing recesses though won't fully know until I get back home and get the chance to mock it up in the swingarm I got off you.

What made you choose that model?
Is that a 5 inch rim?

It was cheap, £30 posted, it's a 4" rim but most importantly for me the same spoke pattern which means I'm less likely to get attention from the police on the continent, considering I got fined for my number plate angle been 5 degrees wrong says their checks are pretty through and having a 3 spoke rear and a 6 spoke front will draw unwanted attention.

The 4 inch rim will be too narrow for your tyre. A cbr 600 f2 wheel is 4.5 and the later f3 model is 5inch. All have the same spoke pattern and are relatively cheap. The f3 uses the same sprocket carrier as the cb500 and is much easier to fit there should be some info on my track bike thread.
I'm using the nc29 swingarm but if I remember correctly the cb500 one is wider.

The f2n wheel uses the same sprocket carrier, disc, bearings and cush drive rubbers. IIRC the disc offset on the f2n wheel is 4or5mm wider than the standard cb5 wheel.

My bandit 400 came with a 4" wheel as stock and had a 150 rear tyre fitted as stock also. The tyre when loose measured 10mm wider than the rim, when it's fitted the tyre definitely isn't pinched. I put a 160 rear tyre on the bandit and that's pinched.

Do you happen to recall the cb500 swingarm width, I know it's on the forum somewhere but I can't find it. I'm toying with some ideas since I've got nothing to do today.

I'm afraid I can't remember the width of the cb500 one. I'm quite surprised that it's not etched into my memory after all these years.
I was running an nc29 rear wheel which is 4.5 inch.
It was only when I fitted a 160 race tyre that I noticed that it didn't sit right, that's why I went to a 5 inch f3 wheel.
Maybe it's just the way tyres are these days, I wondered why Honda went from a 4.5 with the f2 up to a 5 inch with the f3 but kept the same 160 tyre.
Was it just to keep up with the tyre progress?

The top one is the 4.5 inch nc29 wheel and the lower one is the 5 inch f3 wheel.
It may not seem it from these pictures but the difference to the profile of the tyre was huge.

I'm sure we've had this tyre/rim conversation before, I'll definitely be sticking with a 150 tyre as long as I can get sports touring tyres in that size that and it's the oem size for the cb750 f2n with that rim size.

What did you do with your CB500 today? - Page 3 Empty Chain kit replacement

Post by stormbringer Mon 26 Feb 2018, 2:58 pm

Ugh... It ain't a fit night out for man or beast. So, I've decided to prepare my bike for when the salt and snow and misery is gone.

Alas: The long awaited chain kit replacement. Ye olde chain kit has held up its task for 60.000 km, having brought me to England, southern France, Stelvio, Transfagarasan and a lot of tuesday morning commutes too. But now the time has come...

Brand new parts - DID 525V8 chain and a set of JT sprockets - have been lingering on my work table for months. Time to get this undertaking going.

I do believe we have discussed it previously. A touring tyre will have a higher profile/ sidewall so will be better suited to a narrow rim.

Footpeg hanger(s) came today and some cheepo replacement footpegs too. Just need to find the time to replace them and to get back out on the bike as I've got minimal tools - might just have to leave the rear brake m/c running free depending on how stubborn the circlip is going where the brake pedal fits.

Err, not today, but just got back from a tour up north, up to Newcastle and back down to Bedfordshire via a bunch of big northern cities. Key points learned:

    1. What a ridiculously well put together old dog the CB500 is! Riding hours on end, nery a complaint, she did herself proud.

    2. The B road coast roads east of Hull and up to Bridlington are DREAMY! Had a cracking day up that way.

    3. The North is highly good! I can't believe it's the same country - it's so... lively, alive - the people, the landscapes, the bloody house prices. It has so much to shout about, I don't see why it gets such a duff press most of the time. Grim up north? Not in my book.

    4. Don't check your indicators are working while on the move.

That's the shape of it. Good ride, good bike, good trip.

Those roads are boring compared to those in/on the edge of the dales. If you loved east yorkshires roads god knows what you'd think in the dales and the lake district.
